    Dash repair panel?

PS, what in the world? That PO gave zero f*cks!

    Dash repair panel?

I'm not aware of an aftermarket patch panel for this. A junkyard salvage situation will probably be your best bet. Good news is that the dash doesn't tend to rust out, so there are probably lots of them in junkyards. Just bring lots of spot weld cutters and a battery powered angle grinder with...

Looking to buy….what are your thoughts?

IMO, when I bought my rig, it had no obvious rust holes. Just some bubbling paint here and there. Meaning, it was in better shape than this rig. Then I stripped the bedliner on the floors and realized a good portion of the floors needed replacing. Then I wire wheeled some of the exterior...

Cruiser corps rear seat cover issues…

Weird! I bought their seat foam and covers for my jump seats for my '76 (9/75) and they fit great. I used Icon reproduction seat frames, and my rig didn't come with jump seats. So I didn't have a comparison point. Maybe my foam was thicker than OEM?

Stolen FJ40 - Seattle - Tips for the Future

I was worried that you'd get this close to justice, but ultimately not get it. I wonder if it would be better to just know nothing than to be in this situation. But here's some unsolicited advice from a total stranger: don't let this degenerate pull you down. Once you're sure that justice...

    Help, Body panel fitment issue

I see that front of your rocker is properly aligned to the cowl, and that the rocker is parallel to the top of your wheel arch. As such, the only solution I can think of is for you to lower the quarter panel. The curved part in your second to last pic is going to hit the rear cross member, so...

    Rain Gutter and Top Restoration

Hammering out your welds with a dolly as they cool is key. Compressed air to keep the panel cool. Skipping around and not laying down one big bead in one spot. This is the way.

    Rain Gutter and Top Restoration

I took a weekend course that a local fabricator puts on. That was all I needed in order to be effective at welding sheet metal. MIG welding really isn't that hard at all, especially if you'll be welding body panels only. I would seek more training if I were looking to weld anything that lives...

    Rain Gutter and Top Restoration

I don't have experience with any welders other than the one I have (Lincoln 110 volt unit... Weldpack something or other). But I think it's worth saving up for a decent quality Miller, Lincoln, Hobart, ESAB etc welder. If you don't plan to do weld anything thicker than like 3/16", a 110 volt...

Steering- Help me manage my expectations!

very helpful, thanks! Are you saying I should leave it on the frame just to save time if it doesn't need a rebuild? I'm planning to take it off to clean and paint it anyway. What are the signs that it needs a rebuild? Visible play (i.e., move the steering wheel back and forth, and see if the...

Steering- Help me manage my expectations!

Got it- super useful advice everyone!!! Lots of actionable things here. -Center Arm rebuild. It is crusty- looks terrible bolted on to a freshly powder coated frame, so I was planning on taking it off and painting anyway -Tinker with the steering box adjustment. If I recall correctly, when I...

Steering- Help me manage my expectations!

Thanks- I'll start doing some research. I didn't touch the center arm as part of the restoration.

Steering- Help me manage my expectations!

Hi all, my restoration is just about done- I'm just working through some punch list items at this point. I'm wondering if my steering behavior is normal. Before the resto, my rig had 35" tires, a rancho lift, worn out TREs, etc. So never really had a good baseline for comparison. My rig has...

    Builds 1975 Red Money pit

I think it's hard to know how your hardtop sides will actually align unless you do a fully assembly with the roof cap, door headers, and windshield frame. Everything has a great deal of play and adjustability. So I'd recommend at least putting the fiberglass cap on and throwing a few bolts in...

Stolen FJ40 - Seattle - Tips for the Future

Good luck, man. Getting this close to justice and not getting it might be more frustrating than having none of the footage and tracking at all.

    Side Mirror Fitment Help

Digging up this old thread to say, the SOR copies of the EU spec mirrors are trash. My rig is finally nearly finished, and any time I exceed 30 MPH, the mirrors fold in on themselves from the wind. I've tried everything to adjust them. They are totally useless. SURPRISE, you get what you pay...

    Topnault complete 1978 tub-first impression

Yeah, nowadays, the "chinese quality" stereotype doesn't really hold up. You can get really high quality chinese-made stuff, and you can get totally impassable garbage. It generally comes down to how much you are willing to pay. We consumers want the best of both worlds. We expect low prices...

    Topnault complete 1978 tub-first impression

My '76 had deeply pitted floors, a botched PO rear sill replacement, a rusted gas tank recess, cut quarters/wheel openings, and a rusted out wheel well. But it was otherwise structurally sound and the OEM panels (doors, hard top, etc) fit fine. As a first time DIYer, working on the rig 1-2...

    Old Man Emu Bad Reviews

My ome medium duty springs are definitely too short (vertical shackles), and the rear axle was pushed really far forward in the rear wheel well, so I had to drill new holes in the spring perches to push it back far enough to look halfway decent. I haven't flexed them out yet, but I do wonder...
