    Chewbacca's Birfield Grease Guide

Does anyone here have any experience with greases that contain PTFE and molybdenum? This sounds good on paper, but seems like it would need some real-world testing.

Moly grease in the bearings has been tested and produces excellent results. Synthetic grease without moly is another decent choice. Use either with confidence, as long as the FSM specs are met.

Just checking back in here to see how things have been going. Looks like 69000 views on the thread! I have updated the list with some current choices. Glad to see the LC allegiance is as strong as ever! Great product, and it has been added to the list!

Some greases can mix, but I wouldnt recommend it. Recommendations for Mixing Greases Its perfectly ok to have molybdenum in rolling bearings and such, fyi. When you have sliding parts, especially under heavy load, that is where a high pressure lubricant such as molybdenum (moly) is necessary.

Looks like a good grease. It uses a calcium sulfonate thickener, which isn't exactly what the LC FSM specifies, but calcium sulfonate greases are compatible with lithium greases, so you should be ok to mix the two. Calcium sulfonate greases typically outperform lithium greases too.

Good observation. I suppose if the grease meets or exceeds all the Toyota FSM specs, there shouldn't be much to worry about. After some really brief scanning of the product description, it would appear that Shell is really trying to market this grease to the heavy equipment industry, even...

For u-joints, I would definitely recommend the Amsoil synthetic moly grease, the stuff is incredible. There's probably a bunch of great choices for the Birfields, the Valvoline VV985 is probably a decent one that's not too hard to find. Greases that have tackifiers are definitely good.

    Starting issues varying with temperature

I bought a couple coolant temp sensors a few days ago, I will install them and report back.

    Starting issues varying with temperature

It seems as if the air/fuel mix is wrong, when the engine is cold. If I rev it a bit, it seems to "clean out" and run fine afterwards. Its been a long time since I started it outside in the cold. I will have to try it and report back to let you know if it goes to high idle or not after startup.

    Starting issues varying with temperature

Here in MN, when the LC is running properly, it starts in 5 seconds on the coldest nights (negative 20 F). Yes, if the engine is warm, it will start immediately. If the engine is cold, it takes forever to start.

    Starting issues varying with temperature

Starter will crank at any temperature, but the engine will not fire the cylinders and actually run unless the temp is above 70 degrees F.

    Starting issues varying with temperature

I have to literally crank the thing over for ten minutes to get it to start. Eventually I'm going to blow up my starter haha
