    bj40 build

That is a shame, I just read thru this thread expecting to find a well-on restoration, its not as if he didnt seem to have the shillings although he could've knocked out a few stones and put a wide head into that doorway and got the poor thing in out of the rain. When I read that he had got...

Riddle me this: Jump starting a 24V vehicle

Ive jumped 12v systems with 24v systems. As I sat in the vehicle with the dead battery and turned the key, my partner in crime who had already hooked my neg with his neg momentarily touched the lead from my 12v pos to his 24v pos and success followed. Now this was done in an auction yard...

    2L-T engine

No I was at least the 4th owner so how well it was taken care of from '91 to '02 is a lottery. I cant say for sure what caused mine to crack because the timing belt snapped. On removal of the head to see about the damage I found the cracks. Up till then she had been using a small amount of...

    2L-T engine

Crushers, I've had a 2LT in a HiluxSurf and yes the head cracked ('91). Being a member of a good UK surf forum Ive not read that the 2LT head changed at all in the early years but I wont dispute you saying they did. What is true is that Toyota changed the design of the head insofar as the water...

    AltFuel Biodiesel

Heres a good writeup from a friend Maurice who is running his diesel 1KZTE on a veggie oil mix with diesel. Personally I think PPO (Pure Plant Oil) is the future. http://www.yotasurf-online.co.uk/public/forums/showthread.php?t=15893

    Cheap tricks

Learnt this one today from the boss, asked him about fitting new clamps to battery cables. Strip back the inch of sheath and expose the cable to put into the clamp screws but slip an inch of 'half-inch' copper pipe over it before hand. This will keep the strands in the cable real tight and...

    Landcruiser Prados

I was tempted to go for an LJ78 over here for a while but it ended around the same time as my 2LT powered hiluxsurf came down with a cracked head, between the valves on 3 of 4 cyls. That said the 2LT is a fine engine when in good condition, you just need to nurture the cooling system and keep it...

    B lives !

Got around to getting this '81 BJ40 started today. Alternator, fan and belt fitted during the week. Todfay fitted a new battery crossover cable between the 2 batteries. Then decided it would be a good idea to drain whatever coolant was in there and flush thru before refilling. There wasnt any in...

Crooked engine and an alternator question ???

Thanks Lowenbrau, now that I think of it the rear diff IS over to the RHS of the axle, its all becoming clearer now hehe!! I hadnt seen the fan on with the shroud off before and all I had to compare it to was a hiluxsurf I sold recently which ran dead in line down the middle.....but then...

Crooked engine and an alternator question ???

We're talking bout an '81 BJ40 here with B engine, I've had it a while but never seen it run yet. The alternator was missing and the fan had no blades due to a collision with a loose battery clamp. Anyway.... I took the relevant parts from my '83 and got fitting. With the shroud off I fitted...

Maintaining suppleness - old coolant pipes

balls! to be honest and to be fair to Toyota (a corporate entity for which I have an unexplainable affinity for) the hoses are actually great for the age of the vehicle and thats why I want to preserve them, you see my 40's are not goin on the public highway anyday soon but.......they willl.

Maintaining suppleness - old coolant pipes

This is a 'passing the time' kinda post. I've been looking at the coolant pipes on my 2 40s (not restored but needing it) and wonder is there an ideal type of oil I can just brush/spray on there to keep them supple. Is Linseed Oil the trick here? I sprayed diesel on them and the clips about a...

    Please help identify this 40!

Going by the lookup table I have (from a Russian site no less) this frame no. is probably a '77 manufacture year. Given that in the table they seem to have made about 13,000 BJ models a year at the time, then your frame no. is probably late 77 or early 78.

    Best 4runner year?

    Best 4runner year?

For daily driving I'd go for a 2nd gen 89-95 (thats if you have passengers often). The 1st gens were all 2 door. I had a 2nd gen 2 door till the 2LT diesel engine $hit itself, strapping little kids in was a real pain. The 2nd has a drop down tailgate like on the pickup and the 3rd gen has a...
