    97 LX450 coolant loss

Good theory, but the head gasket doesn't seal the exhaust port. Normally, when the engine heats up (IE harder driving) the loss of coolant escalates. Not saying your wrong but where going against conventional wisdom. I'm wondering if the thermostat opening up may have some bearing on this...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

First 150 miles down I used very little coolant, maybe a pint or so. The return trip used about 2 qts. I did very little idling going down, stopped for a car wash and was stuck in line for 15-20 mins. waiting. I have noticed in the past weekds that the slower the vehicle is driven, the more...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

Thanks for the tip on NAPA, I have an account there and may go that route instead. I am using red coolant, have been since I bought it 70,000 miles ago. I hear you on the limited choices of where the coolant is going. I just can't get my mind around the lack of other evidence. I will be...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

Thanks for the tip on the hoses, I will be checking that next. Beowulf, I'm trying to follow your thought here, if it is getting into a combustion chamber at the rate I'm losing it, I assume I would have deposits on the spark plug and at least a small cloud of coolant at the tail pipe. I...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

I have driven it as hard as 2 hours at 75MPH + on the highway and then turned around and did it again. There is no trail from the overflow hose, dry inside also. I just replaced the radiator cap last week with a factory cap, I felt the old cap was not holding pressure and I noticed a rip on...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

Good morning. Yes, I was concerned when I saw the rapidly rising pressure also, however, it stopped at 14 PSI which is not unacceptable. If it had kept rising then I would have assumed coolant system was open to combustion chamber. But it stopped and maintained, then dropped. Yes I do have a...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

Hey guys thanks for the quick response. The rear heat works fine, lines are dry and the carpets are too. I have pressure tested the system, almost 30 minutes at operating temperature. No leaks, however I did think that the spot at the timing cover I mentioned earlier looked more damp...

    97 LX450 coolant loss

Been awhile since I've been here, started my own business a couple a years ago and got no time. My LX450 has been using coolant at an alarming rate (2 quarts every 300 miles or so) and I cannot get a handle on it. Here's what I know. 170,000 miles on vehicle. No evidence of coolant in the...

    cd player wont play

This may be too obvious but has the player ever worked? If not, the CD's get installed upside down from normal. This caused my wife great distress until I explained it to her.

    Cold Tacoma

I got the answer yesterday, the temperature control knob appears to control not only the cable for the valve on the firewall but also opens and closes a flap under the dash and this cable was out of adjustment.

    Cold Tacoma

Got a 2000 Tacoma 4X4 with around 200,000 mile on it. Problem is there is virtually no heat in the cab. The engine is coming up to operating temperature, the heater valve is new and operating properly. The heater core has been flushed and flows adequately. At this point the only option may...

    very puzzling brake problem...

For the price of rear pads I would install new ones, whether the old ones are in spec or not. I had a Honda Accord with mushy pedal last year, rear pads looked good. Replaced them anyway because of some slight cracking and the pedal went from mush to firm for $15.00.

    Bleeding the Brake

Before you condemn the M/C you need to hold pressure on the pedal and see if it "leaks" down to the floor. If it doesn't, then the M/C may be fine. How long has it been since you checked the rear pads. Worn rear pads can give you a spongy feel in the pedal.

Could it be anything else besides the head gasket?

Overheating at highway speeds is indicative of a radiator's cooling capacity to be compromised. Are the fins crumbly? When you look down from the opening does it appear to be corroded? Also, check the A/C condenser and see if the fins are full of debris, this keeps air from getting to the...

Nevermind, missed the link the first time through. Nice conversion, I have a mk1 Cabby that needs something like that.

Mobil 1 vs Valvoline's racing oil data point

I have run independent tests on dino motor oil. Valvoline was one of the worst for pressure and cleanliness. Castrol came out on top every time. Followed by Kendall. I did not test synthetics because at that time I changed my oil every one thousand miles and didn't see the need for synth. oil.

    Would you buy this??

Salvage titles make me cautious, but don't scare me away. I have seen many vehicles issued salvage titles for nothing more than blown airbags and a front bumper and valance. I would ask the dealership to let you bring it to a frame shop of your liking and talk to the frame guy afterwards. If...

Head gasket failure on various makes

Subaru had head problems as far back as 87' I don't mean the occasional replacement. There was a campaign on S.P.I. 1.8L heads cracking between the valve seats and M.P.I.'s were doing it too. It got so bad that for awhile we couldn't get factory heads for the cars and were looking into...

Head gasket failure on various makes

In my experience, V6's of any make are prone to HG failure. There are particular models that are more problematic ie Toyota V6's, Isuzu's, GM, Ford, Chrysler. The Nissan V6's seem to be more stable as do the Honda/Acura. Head gaskets in general seem to be more of a problem now than they...
