Leaking front differential through third member attachment fasteners…

I recently tried to tighten up these loose fasteners (the nuts seemed to almost be unthreaded) at the bottom of my front differential. Now they are weeping gear oil. Are the nuts just screwed to studs that are threaded into the axle housing? Or are they some kind of special fastener? If I...

Need Oil Pan and Gasket... Best Source?

I have a FJ40 with a '85 FJ60 2F Engine Swap. Oil pan is leaking under the "bash plate" - probably from one of the welds. Any recommendations on parts vendors with good prices and reasonable shipping? I found this - seems fairly recent. Can anyone confirm the part number for the pan and...

Slight Play (Top-Bottom) in Front Passenger Tire/Wheel/Hub

I have a '74 FJ40. It has had a Front Disk Brake conversion (FJ-60 parts) and an FJ-60 Power Steering conversion. If I jack up the front of the truck and grab the top and bottom of the passenger front tire, I can rock the wheel (slightly), the top & bottom of tire moves maybe 1/8" in & out...

Machinists? What do you think this Starrett setup is for?

Obviously it’s a dial indicator setup, but what’s the see-saw arrangement all about? It seems like it’s an upside-down height gauge? Just got it…. No matter what it is, it’s pretty cool… Rocky

Two Quick Questions for you Emissions "Smart Guys"

I have an '85 2F transplanted into my FJ-40. Much of the emissions stuff has been retained IAW guidance from this Forum. I had two quick questions: 1. What is the purpose of the lower port on the HAC Valve (Not the big one, which I understand should be open to the air...). Should it be...

‘85 2F engine, Lost oil Pressure.... Troubleshooting Suggestions?

I just drove my 74FJ 40, with (a swapped 2F) up to my mountain cabin. the motor has been in for at least 5 years and has run great. While idling at the end of the trip, I noticed ticking sounds. I looked at the gauge, and it was at about 1/3 of its normal position. It always sat at the center...

Toyota Taillights (from Asia) on Ebay for ~$80/pair (delivered)

If you search around a little on eBay you can get lots of choices for Toyota FJ-40 Taillight Assemblies (Third Generation, 1979 - 85) for about $80 delivered. It's a smoking deal. I was looking to replace one of my taillight lenses, and I found these whole new assemblies. It made sense just...

Are there multiple styles of '74 Speedometer Cables?

I have a '74 FJ-40 that originally came with the F1.5 motor (transition motor). It also has a 4 speed gearbox. I am looking for a speedo-cable. The one I removed (it was siezed) seems to take a square drive at the transmission end, that doesn't extend past the sheet metal cover that mates...

    Talk About Lucky.....

After driving up Mount Lemmon, and driving down the rugged, bumpy road to my mountain retreat, I put my LC into reverse and heard a horrible grinding noise.... It was my driver's front tire dragging on my bumper, because the front axle shifted forward when I went into reverse.... Why? Because...

Knuckle Preload Shims - How to they work?

It would seem that having less shims would increase the preload, and adding more shims would reduce it - is this right?. Do the shims space out the bearing retainers on the steering arm (top) and bearing cap (bottom)? Or am I not clear on how the system works? An explanation would be...

    Improve Seal on Knuckle Ball?

I am tearing into my knuckles, due to a poor seal on the axle (inner seal). I intend to use the Marlin Crawler Double Seal... But that's another subject. The wipers / felts didn't seal that well either. As I look at the axle balls, I note the surface could use some work. What's the best way...
