I've replaced the struts (with Donahoes), the upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and the cv axles. It's all realtively easy if you've worked on automobiles before.
Check out Tundrasolutions for that info. The first two years did have OD issues, I think most of the bad ones self-destructed at less than 100,000 miles. They changed to a stronger OD gear and bearing set (I think) starting with the 03s.
I wouldn't be afraid of one if it drove well...
Got a 2003, we bought it new in the fall of 2002. It's been flawless for 190,000 miles now, and has taken our family of four camping all over the East. As the kids are nearing adulthood, it's just the wife and I on most trips now, so we've made ourselves more comfortable with our Teadrop trailer...
2000 would be an Access Cab (rear suicide doors). Double Cab was 2004+
Check Ball Joints (I think the recall was for 2001-2003)
Check front brakes. The 2000 had a smaller caliper and brake shoe that was prone to warping. There was a factory fix for that and the 2003+ had the bigger...
Certainly no guru, but I must say my Tundra has been the best truck I've ever owned, and it's now the vehicle I've put the most mileage on. Good shocks, good tires and drive it.....
I don't see an issue with the wheel spacers. If it helps make the 285s fit it should be fine. I'm thinking you'll have to do the pinchweld and still lift it a bit (1-1/2" maybe even 2"). The Bilsteins have several notches on them from stock height and up to 2-1/2", you can always start on the...
This is awesome! Great looking trailer!
My wife and I are seriously thinking about building (or buying) an offroad teardrop in the near future. I would love to see more shots of this! Lessee....How's it tow? How roomy is the interior? and how well setup is the kitchen?
If you're talking about your 01, it's got 3.91s in it. I think maybe the V6 had 4.10s and some of the DoubleCab V8s after 2004, but the early first gen V8s were 3.91s. If you've got a window sticker saved back somewhere it states the gear ratio...
Go over to Tundrasolutions.com and search "DJ's alignment specs". He's the alignment guru over there, and following his alignment figures seems to solve a lot of peoples problems with poor alignments.....oh and shop around for a different alignment joint....even if they couldn't get it perfect...
For the 01s I think the only issues were the brakes, and th OD in the transmission would go out before 100,000 miles on some of them. If it's mechanically sound and the price is good, it should be fine....
I've got the Cooper S/Ts on my Tundra. They are louder than just about every other AllTerrain tire out there. They may not be quite as loud as an MT, but I haven't had MT's on the truck.
For mileage, I got an easy 50,000 miles out of them with 6/32 of tread left when I got a new set...
I'd be mighty tempted to buy those in 255/85/16s. The S/Ts on the truck have about a year left before I'll need a new set of tires. The STT (and the Toyo MT, and the BFG KM2) are tires I'd love to try if I had the money to burn.
The 33" height of the 255/85 without the A-arm (and inner...
Timing belt on the V8 is scheduled for every 90,000. Other than that it's the usual used vehicle stuff, transmission fluid ( does it shift ok on a test drive? ; does it smell burnt?), ball joints, brakes, etc. The earlier ones had some brake rotor issues, and there were some that had...
I like my Fiskars axe. It's light and quick, easy to handle...my wife likes to chop campfire wood with it! It does nick a bit on the blade but a few swipes with a file and it's edge is fine again.
