There's not much, but here's what I could find in the owners manual and the Emission Control CA Supplement.
I looked in the Chassis and Body FSM under body-electrical, but didn't find anything.
Hope this helps.
The local guy I go to said he leases his older car smog check machine (76-99?) from the state, because they're too expensive to buy. I have a '99 100 series I love, that requires the older testing machine as well.
Out of state registration has crossed my mind too.
As a 20+ year owner of a 76 here in Cali, I feel your pain.
I've had a tech fail the rig because the engine didn't stall when he routed manifold vacuum to the EGR. Modern cars will stall, our 40's won't. The air intake to the carb will sound hollow, per the FSM for emissions.
I've had a tech...
So sad.
Marlin rebuilt the carb for my '76 FJ40 last year while I was getting the engine rebuilt. I was impressed with him as a quality person before I even got my rig back and running. His kindness, time, attention to detail and PATIENCE with me on the phone while he explained what he was...
@fyton2v Here's some info from the Emissions FSM for my 76.
My rig doesn't stall when manifold vacuum is connected to the egr at idle. The air intake just changes sound at the carb (with the air cleaner removed) per the FSM.
I've had smog stations connect manifold vacuum to the egr valve, and...
Not difficult at all. I left the fender on and removed/installed the box from underneath. I have headers, so I'm not sure of the clearance for a stock exhaust manifold.
Installed a rebuilt steering box, first time in 20+ years of ownership. The old one was loose, out of adjustments and leaking.
I repainted the box because it was packed in a plastic bag with wet paint and was a mess.
I went with primer gray with a clear coat over it. While I had it apart, I...
I've used a U-haul dolly to tow my 40 200 miles, but with my UZJ100.
The car hauler wasn't available in time and I'm happy it wasn't. The extra weight and increased stopping distance would have sucked. I had to greatly increase my stopping distance as it was in freeway traffic even with the tow...
Nice work, jealous of your blue and gold plates! I wish CA DMV offered those new. I have personalized plates and would love to switch them out for the period correct colors.
I'll also offer any help I can for smogging your friends rig, I've been getting my 2/76 to pass for 20 years now.
I got these from Toyota, assuming they would be Koito. Countries of manufacture are Thailand, Germany, and Italy, not Japan. Next time I'll just go to the local parts store.
Congrats on such a great 40! I'm green with envy over that factory A/C and PTO winch.
My Feb. 1976 CA spec 40 was originally Dune Beige too, but a previous owner (I'm the 4th) painted it P.O.S. (Previous Owner Silver). The only thing left beige is the dash and windshield frame.
The black wire...
