    Out to Pasture

It was starting to have other problems. Not worth putting the money into fixing it, unfortunately. Hartford gave me $12,338 for it, so that was the best way to go for me, economically.

    Out to Pasture

In case anybody is near Sacramento and is interested. I crunched my 1988 FJ62 and it left for the Copart auction yard in South Sacramento today. 250,000 miles on it. Insurance company totaled it. You might be able to pick it up cheap. It has new AC compressor, new alternator and the...

    Proportioning Valve

Great! Just what I needed to know. I have the shop manual and the same diagram is on page BR-53, but I still couldn't figure out exactly how it works. Apparently, you can also adjust the shackle to change the brake fluid pressure. To really do it correctly takes a special equipment and...

    Proportioning Valve

Have searched and read posts, but there are still some things that I'm not sure of... My '88 FJ62 got 7,000 miles on it's last set of front brakes! So my mechanic thinks that the proportioning valve may be stuck and that the rear brakes may not be working at all. He said to jack it up, put it...

    Weird Oil Consumption Behavior

Passes smog with NO near max. I have been thinking valve guide seals are the problem (they were replaced in the rebuild but may not have been OEM), but no smoking at startup or after prolonged idle. Very small misc. oil leakage, not enough to drip even (oil pan seal was replaced recently)...

    Weird Oil Consumption Behavior

Nothing has been done that would affect oil consumption - no work to the engine or smog system at all around the times that it stopped burning oil. Duh. I realize that changing oil wouldn't do it - that's just a strange coincidence. It's a daily driver. I'm retired, so it's not a commute...

    Weird Oil Consumption Behavior

My 88 FJ62 was burning a quart of oil every 500 miles when I bought it about three years ago. The engine had been recently rebuilt (including the top end). Based on advice from the mechanic that I bought it from, I changed my oil brand about two years ago (to Kendall High Performance 20-50)...

    Calif. Smog Standards Calculation

Here's a 2011 smog test report from San Rafael. NOX limits are around 400 ppm higher than what's required this year in Sacramento. I wonder if it varies by county? It must. Just like the gas vapor recovery systems at the pumps? Interesting. You'd think Contra Costa would be similar to San...

    Calif. Smog Standards Calculation

I found a copy of a Calif. emissions test for an FJ62 here on MUD from 2009 and the passing emissions levels were significantly higher than mine for 2011 (this year looks the same as for 2011 for mine).

    Outrageous NOx

Ah yes. Well, not quite. At 25 mph, I'm right at the limit (80 ppm). However, most of my measurements are only slightly more or a little less than two years ago. Several people have told me that my excessive oil consumption has probably wiped them out. So... what does it mean that my numbers...

    Calif. Smog Standards Calculation

My apologies if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it. I've been told this by two smog shops and a mechanic now, so I suspect it's correct. In 1999, the Republic of Calif. started a new process for setting max emissions values. They started out with somewhat high values then...

    Outrageous NOx

Well... it passed! The missing PVC grommet fed so much air into the engine that it bumped the NOX from 544/571 to 2673/2547 !! There was also a cracked vacuum hose, which probably contributed to the problem a little. But... I'm probably on borrowed time with my cats. Considering my high oil...

    Outrageous NOx

Okaaayyy... The EGR and air injection systems have been throughly checked out and both systems are working fine. My chief Landcruiser mechanic thinks the cats need replacing (240K on them and she has been burning oil, which I have heard damages the cats). Mechanic thinks that the missing PVC...

    Outrageous NOx

Just had the valves adjusted. I've driven about 50 miles since i cleared the codes. I just checked and there aren't any now. I suspect the pvc grommet leak was a lot of it, but my NOx barely passed two years ago. I'm having the EGR and air injection systems checked out Monday by the mechanic i...

    Outrageous NOx

Wow. I didn't realize how badly California is shafting us. NOx requirement at 15/25 MPH was 1062/1073 in August of 2011. Today it's 690/592. It's not right to try to drive these older vehicles off of the road. I guess some day I may have to register it at my cousin's in Oregon...
