HDJ81 is gone - replacement is awesome

So I sold my HDJ81 back in March. After some shopping around I picked up a 2010 VW Touareg TDI Highline. Wow! What a torque monster! This thing is powerful and very refined. You can barely tell it's a diesel unless you stick your head under the hood. I drove it back to Winnipeg from Edmonton and...

    1990 HDJ81 5 speed - for sale

****The truck has sold. We're just finalizing the shipping.**** My local insurance monopoly has written off my Cruiser due to a hit and run. Damage is limited to the rear quarter (sheetmetal, light, bumper end, mudflap). After fighting with the insurance company for a year, I managed to get a...

    JDM-capable appraiser in Manitoba

Manitoba Public Insurance (monopoly) has told me to get an appraisal on my HDJ81 in my continuing battle to get repairs from a hit and run. Their own appraisal did not take into account the fact that this is a JDM import, is a very rare 5 speed, has expensive maintenance done, and has many...

HDJ81: No power to radio, clock, cigarette lighter, dome lights

I've checked all the fuses, relays and fusible links. The door switches still work as my alarm still works properly. Might this be a ground problem? Which ground are they all connected to?

Value of complete 1HDT and H151F

Wondering what the fair market value for a complete, fully running, well maintained 1HDT with transfer case and H151F manual transmission would be. This is from a daily driver. BEBs done, injectors done, timing belt done, glow plugs replaced, ACSD removed, no abnormal noises. Driveshafts and...

    1HDT lost all towing power

Hey, I haven't towed anything other than a utility trailer in the past year. This weekend I towed my ~1800lb boat and trailer home and the truck had no power at all. Normally it runs quite well. It starts quickly, idles smoothly and rips around town without issue. I do notice it is much less...

For Sale  (feeler) 1990 HDJ81 VX 5 speed

I am considering selling my 1990 HDJ81 5 speed in order to upgrade to something a bit more modern. This has been my daily driver since 2007. Imported from Japan in 2006. This has the very, very rare 5 speed transmission. The turbodiesel is powerful and sounds great through the 3" exhaust. It...

    RTH: 1HDT starting issues

For the past couple of days I was getting duk, duk, duk, duk sound from the starter and no start. My batteries have been giving me grief, so I replaced them with brand new last night. Without touching anything else, right after installing the new batteries, I no longer get the duk, duk, duk...

    HDJ81 crunched while parked

I came out after visiting a friend, to find my Cruiser pushed up onto a snowbank with a fair bit of rear corner damage. The other driver lost control on the icy street and decided to use my Cruiser as a way to stop quickly. Rear corner panel is split open like a tin can, light assembly exploded...

Water temp gauge reading too low?

I installed the temp sensor in the upper radiator pipe. Readings have not gone above 140°F. AC on, +34°C ambient, and only 140°F. Seems too low to me. I have yet to replace the silicone oil in my fan clutch - it seems to be nearly "locked". Thermostat was done 4 years ago. I'll be replacing...

    What is "hammering"

I've read on MUD a few times that low rpm, high gear acceleration can cause "hammering" to the pistons. Can someone please explain this to me? I like the low end grunt of both my diesels, and I try to keep the rpms low around town. I typically shift between 2000 and 2500 rpm. I rarely go over...

    Comparing different snorkel materials

I'm considering buying a snorkel for my HDJ81, mainly to prevent sucking in hot under-hood air. But I'd rather not spend $400 on a Safari. So off to eBay to see what kind of "knock-offs" I can find. What I've found is snorkels ranging in price from around $130 to $190, coming from the US...

Anyone have a source for smoked DEPO tailights?

I've been trying to find the DEPO smoked LED tailights for my 80. The only ones I've found are on eBay, but the seller wants $90 to ship them to Canada. I'm sure actual shipping cost would be about $25. Normally I would have them shipped to a parcel service just over the border, but this seller...

Any issues getting Monstaliner shipped to Canada?

I'm planning on placing an order in the next few weeks. I'm just trying to decide on a colour. Are there any issues with shipping Monstaliner across the border to Canada? Or having it shipped to the US side of the border and carrying it over the border?

    Another 1hdt gets a 3" exhaust

3" aluminized steel mandrel bent exhaust installed yesterday with an Aeroturbine 3030XL muffler. They routed over the frame and tucked the tip up under the bumper with a downward exit. First impressions: It's not as loud as my old 2.5" system with only a resonator. I also had a pretty big...

What CST silicone oil in stock 1HDT fan clutch?

I have the original fan clutch in my 1HDT. The fan is difficult to turn when cold, and almost impossible to stop when running. It doesn't seem to "freewheel" at all. For the relative cheap cost, I plan on draining the clutch and refilling. But what CST should I use? I've read a ton of posts...

    Show me your exhaust tips

I just ordered an Aeroturbine AT3030XL muffler, and will be getting a custom fabricated 3" exhaust built. I'm looking for ideas for exhaust tips/termination. Currently I have a "fart can" resonator with a 5" rolled outlet facing straight back. Being a diesel, I'd like to be able to keep an eye...

Cooling system chemical flush before or after replacing all coolant hoses?

I will be replacing all the rad and heater hoses on my truck in the very near future. I also want to do a chemical flush. What do people recommend as far as order of operations? Flush then replace hoses? Or replace hoses first then flush? DOes it make any difference?
