I just about ruined mine with an open ended wrench before I remembered I had access to some line wrenches. I'm not a fan of how these brake lines are set up at all.
No way around it. You gotta pull the brake lines apart.
I've seen a picture of someone who after removing the dust shield and brake lines took that brake line mounting bracket thingy off the dust shield and re-attached it with bolts so he didn't have to open up the brake lines again.
There's a lot more to a de-smog than pulling hoses. But that's just me stating the obvious.

My smog pump seized so I just desmogged. I went from 12MPG highway to 16MPG. And the engine seems to be happier.
