steering and brakes
my dad showed up monday evening and was ready to get to work on the welding, so we dived in. first thing was to weld the steering column to the firewall dash support.
next up was welding the actual steering shaft to the u-joint. this was the critical weld, and i think...
once you start, you cant stop
my dad was coming up the next day to weld the steering components and help finish up a few other things, so i was trying to wrap up everything else. the last thing i wanted to get done was to finish flushing the cooling system. i had flushed it a few times already...
radiator redux
after seeing all of the rust and gunk that was in my radiator and heater hoses, i finally decided to do what i had known i was going to have to do all along: get a whole new radiator. i had already spent time adapting the taurus fan to work with the stock radiator and moving the...
the only reason i said it was 'easier' was that there was less to do. with both conversions, you have to mount the plate and drill the 3 (or 4) holes to mount the box. but with the traditional install, you also have to drill a hole in the front crossmember and then reinforce it with a sleeve...
that is my thread (i am the one who did the astro van swap) and i would definitely do it again. because the external casting is the same as a normal saginaw box, i was even able to use the standard style mounting plates (bought mine from orange45 - came with all of the spacers and hardware...
long time no update
i moved away from phoenix before i finished up my build, but i thought i would post a quick update anyway. you can see the latest in this thread:

now it starts, lights up, makes noises, and even can move under its...
hey cliff!
yes, we moved up to whidbey island (washington state) in december. i am sure you thought i had wrapped up this build a long time ago, but things have been slow with moving and all. but it is moving along again now - hopefully will be driving it before summer is through (and i wont...
spent some more time wiring last weekend and have everything just about done now. every knob and control on the dash is in and working (minus the windshield washer, but only because i dont have a washer to hook up). the hardest part was definitely the hazard switch/turn signal switch/brake...
here is how i ended up wiring mine, using the EZ wiring harness and stock turn signal switch, hazard switch, and brake switch. (my cruiser is an early 1972 model, so it is essentially the same as a 1971 for reference):
- from the harness - wire from the flasher (mine was brown, labeled...
funny you should say that because i was tossing and turning all last night, thinking about how i was going to ground the instrument panel and how to install the wiper motor and when i was going to put the gas tank back in and a million other details that i want to get wrapped up.
i spent part of saturday and most of sunday figuring out the wiring for the new harness (ez wiring, not painless, but i am sure they are almost the same), turn signal switch, brake switch, hazard switch, and LED tailights. first i tried to wire it up according to the wiring diagram for my year...
when you do hear from them and/or get it figured out, make sure to post up the solution. i am getting ready to wire mine up as well and would appreciate any tips they pass along.
thanks for the radiator advice. several other people have said the same thing, and i have been seriously considering replacing it. seeing as how i have only run the engine about four time, and the longest was less than 10 minutes, i have not had any issues yet =) but i definitely dont want to...
no posts for a long time here since progress has been slow since we moved. but this past weekend i spent quite a bit of time working on the landcruiser and actually got quite a lot of stuff done.
i had started working on the doors awhile back, but never finished because i didnt have the...

If Jesse suggested the cut-and-turn to rotate the pinion because you are going to be running a double-cardan (CV) joint at the transfer case end, then he is right. When running the CV joint, the pinion needs to point directly at the transfer case and I dont believe you can get that kind...
i think the 1967 flange must be smaller than later models. mine is a 1972 and the stock flange is much larger. the aftermarket 'smaller' flange from downey or advance adapters is the same size as the one you have as stock. maybe i will hunt down a stock 1967 driveshaft and see how it fits...
I am a little confused - are you back to running the Downey adapter, or did you change over to the AA adapter? Are you using the stock flange, or the smaller one pictured in your post above? And it *is* working with your 4" lift? What year is your fj40?
Any more pictures you could take would...
so you have this set up working? did you have to use a different bolt in the transmission pan near where the flange is? my yoke/flange bolts will hit one of the transmission pan bolts if i dont do something creative there.
as for the driveshaft - what type of lift do you have? do you have any...
