    Blue Mule resto in Malawi

Hey, thanks for checking in. The Blue Mule is still a daily driver. The paint has held up better than expected. I attribute some of that to the RB - every part of the Mule that got the RB treatment is still in good, rust-free condition, even the frame. The parts where we couldn't treat the rust...

Full rebuild - Order of operations for reconstruction

Hi. Read your note some time ago, but just now found it again. IMO, you should do as much as possible with the tub off. I recommend even installing frame mounted brake lines, fuel lines, and electrical harness where you can with the tub off. That way you have nearly complete access to the...

    A South African BJ40 rebuild into a FJ40

I understand, Keith. I initially thought maybe you could import a 5-speed from Oz, but importation costs can be daunting. I've been around Mud, mostly light lurking for the past few years. Retired a few years back and have been busier than ever since then. We're finally getting the homestead...

    A South African BJ40 rebuild into a FJ40

Keith, Any thoughts about swapping in an H55 5-speed rather than swapping the diffs? I'm thinking I will do this when I eventually get around to doing a second frame off on the Blue Mule (which will happen... no time soon), to address the rust I couldn't fix while in Malawi. This will be the...

    Welcome to Veterans' Highway!

Well, why not? I always enjoy the company of fellow vets. I've been on Mud as M5Driver since Dec 2007. I've been inactive/lurking for a few years, due to travel, other commitments, health, etc. but think we're finally more or less settled in retirement  My service was with the Army...

    Blue Mule resto in Malawi

TKS, Hecrod. Since I got retarded...ahh, I mean RETIRED, and got the Mule back here from Togo, I have spent most of my time, energy, and money on rebuilding our current retirement home. The Blue Mule has had regular small workouts, but not a lot of real trail time. I had an ignition issue to...

    Opinions on Frame Coatings

You might try Rust Bullet, then your choice of finishes/paints over that. It has worked well for the Blue Mule's frame. :) You can't let it get wet before it cures, but it is otherwise easy to use... thin with xylene or MEK if needed, make sure there is no moisture in the airhose, and spray.

Top Ten FJ40 MUD Buildouts... your opinion counts!

Honored to be mentioned. There are so many really great resto and rescue stories here, it is hard to pick just 10 ;). The Blue Mule story would never have happened without all the great support and help MUD members provide.

    Blue Mule resto in Malawi

Thanks for the bump. Sorry about the long hiatus in the Blue Mule saga. Internet in Togo was really bad. FWIW, the Blue Mule and I retired to Arizona this year - me in May; the Mule took a few months to get there from Togo. I plan to do a bit of clean up and maintenance and have it on the...

Builds complete BJ45 rebuild start next week in Bolivia

Mercy buckets! The mule did OK considering the climate and the problems I had with the re-spray when I rebuilt it. I really need to replace the rear sill - couldn't do that earlier. That is the main problem area. It was a good choice for the conditions in Lomé, and Togo in general. Once it...
