    Can you describe exactly what happens when you turn the ignition key ie: Does the starter crank (turn) the engine but the engine won't fire (start)? Or, do you hear clicks/clicking only and the starter doesn't crank/turn the engine?

    Another option is to grab what you can with a large pair of pliers or vice grips tightened down well, then pull. There are various styles of internal bearing and seal pullers with fingers that work well. Be careful not to pry on the ring behind the seal.

    You could try a small inspection camera to look for it, some small inexpensive models will attach to your phone. Have you removed the crank seal yet? The key may not have gone far.

    Thermostats can go bad, what's the age of the Tsat? Do you hear the fan clutch engage when the engine is first started and then quiet down after awhile??
