I saw the same FJ40. It's been there a long time. I live near there. It looked rough, but it could still be an awesome trail vehicle for someone with the money and time. Unfortunately that's not me. I already have my 75 FJ40 project that I don't have time or money to spend on until this winter.
Maybe I am being naive, but has anyone done a mini truck disc brake conversion by buying all the mini truck parts you need from a Toyota dealership parts store? It may be expensive, but it may save the work of tearing down the parts from a used axle. Thanks in advance for your input.
A Toyota-Nissan parts yard wants $350 for a solid front axle from a 1984 4x4 pick up. Is that too much? Anyone know where to get it cheaper. It will be for a front disc conversion on an FJ40. Thanks.
Thanks for your input everyone. I am now thinking that I should do a mini truck disc brake conversion. I was going to do the axle rebuild plus a total brake job. Is there anyone out there that believe drum brakes up front are still the way to go?
Thanks xumFJ40. I replaced the diaphram last night and connected the vacuum hoses per the diagram in the Haynes manual. It actually runs a little better now, and the smoke at idle is gone. I just have smoke at acceleration now--which I think is the valve stem seals. It might be the carb...
I recently bought a 75 FJ40. The PO removed the vacuum hose from the AAP diaphram attached to the carb. Fuel drips out of the diaphragm. After I replace it, is it ok to simply plug it with a cap? A couple of the symptoms--which may be unrelated--include smoke/soot from tailpipe and inability...
Thanks for the tips. I might try to do it sometime this month. I've never done this before and just wanted to know if there was something tricky that I should look out for. I asked a mechanic about it yesterday, and he wanted $195 ($65/hr. for 3 hours) to do the job--but I still have to supply...
Smog Pump brackets for 1975 FJ40
I need the smog pump mounting bracket as well as the tensioner bracket for a 1975 2F FJ40. Please let me know if you have these and how much you want for them. Thanks.
John
Just finished doing a compression test. Numbers 1 through 5 came in between 140 and 142. No. 6 came in at 138. This was a dry test and without warming up the engine. If I remember correctly these are ok numbers. I didn't bother doing a wet test. It got dark so I would not have had time...
Thanks Steve C. I have been researching how to do this job without messing up. I especially don't want to have to pull the head off. I read something about replacing the valve stem seals with ones that came with the 2Fs in the 1987 FJ60, because it is made with better materials. Anyone know...
