    1972 FJ40: Good year for first FJ40?

Nothing wrong with a 72. I like the looks and the steel on the older 40's but that's all personnal taste. If you going to do mods: Disk brakes, tranny swap, power steeing they make great Toys. As a completly stock, mostly street rig I would go 76 or later as they are quieter, and have a...

    t-case rear seal

The one I bought at Toyota about a year ago has a double seal. The parts guy said Toyota has upgraded it, the one I pulled out was a single wiper.

    seats

Sure, I used Honda Prelude seats but many others will work as well. You will need to do some fab work with angle or tube steel to mount the drivers seat to the frame over the tool box. The pass seat I just bolted down to the old seat botttom.

    Highway speeds

Both of my 40's; a stock 71 and a stock 74 will make 75MPH easy. I don't usually push them that hard, but they will do it. Sounds like your clutch is starting to slip some. Put it in 3rd on level ground and dump the clutch, see if it stalls right out or slips and revs a little.

Is my tranny a "boat anchor"

The 10,16,19 splines are the out put ends going to the T-case. Wouldn't it be easier to go with a Chevy tranny SM465,420,NV4500 and use all stock GM parts . Then the only adapter would be to the T-case?

    headlights...crap

This is real common on older cars exspecialy the 40. Unhook the battery first, remove all fuses and clean the fuse holders with fine sandpaper, spray off dirt with electrical contact cleaner(from auto parts store). Check your drain hoses from the cowl vent, if loose or rotten it will let...

    TBI on F engine

It's an 87 (I think) Astro van. I was afraid it might get more involved that just bolting on parts. I wish someone would market a chip or computer setup for the F/2F but I guess it's not that simple. I have my carb running pretty well at 7000 were I live but, I know it runs lean when I...

    TBI on F engine

Thanks for the input. I think I will grab all the TBI parts now and set on them untill I have more $$ for a dist. and whatever else I need. If you run into any tricks or problems along the way please post if you don't mind. I know I'm fooling myself but would really like to do this over a...

    TBI on F engine

I know were I can get all the TBI stuff off a wreck pretty cheap but will my stock 71 distrubtor with a Pertronix points eliminator be a clean enough signal for the Computer? Howell fuel injection said they can burn a new chip if I need it but I would need a clean tach signal. Has anyone used...

    Clutch

Classic Cruisers in Salida should have it. 1-888-376-2420. The Toyota dealer in Motor City has also be good about finding stuff for me, even things the other dealer said were not avaliable anymore.

    idle solenoid questions

Sorry 3. Don't know, hope I don't have to find out soon. 4. If your sure it's dead you could take it out and cut off the plunger so it won't ever kill the idle curcit. You might have some run-on after you turn it off. If it is just hard to starte but tries to idle it needs a tune up.

    idle solenoid questions

    1. Yes should be 12v between wire and ground. 2. If your giving any pedle at all it should starte and stay running as long as you keep it above idle. The selinoid just cuts the idle curcit out so it won't diesel.

    Sm465 rebuilding manual?

I went to the Library and checked out an old Motors manual that covered 70's trucks. Also used the digital camera on the innerds. Hardest parts is moving or lifting the pig around the shop. P.S. Don't buy and bearings or small parts at Chevy, they mark them up like 500% or so.

    Windshield wipers

I changed the arms on my 71 over to Ansco( got them at Checker I think) and it uses 11" ansco blades you can get anywere. Also seems to have more tension aginst the glass than the 30 year old Toyota ones.

    Bolt on cross brace?

Looks like I will have to move or replace the tube crossbrace to fit the 465 I'm putting in my 71 /40. I'm thinking about making a bolt on one than cutting out the old tube. Classic Cruisers said they weld plate to the old tube and weld it back on the frame. I'm not too crazy about welding on...

    pitman arm for saginaw

You didn't put a Toyota TRE on did you? The pitman needs a Chevy end. I bought my reach rod with the Toyota and Chevy ends from Downey or Man-A Fre can't remember. When I bought it it had a water pipe for a rod, with both ends welded on!!

    ps box mod

Personnaly I think steering isn't the place to be cheap. My 40 had a real crapy P/S setup when I got it. The cheap U-joints had a bunch of slop in them. I used a Borgeson at the box and a Flaming River at the top, Both are still like new after 3 years of abuse.
