Stink Update
What a PITA. Re-gapped the plugs. Still no good. Looked the timing, but it was odd, so I checked the coil and sure enough the thing was arcing across the little metal bar on the bottom (is there a technical name for that?). Quick trip for a new coil and looky there, timing was at...
You cannot see it in my pictures, but mine are attached with a couple of set screws each. The extensions slide onto the pipes, then I tighten the screws. When I hit the trail :), off they come. Back on the pavement :frown: and back on they go. Still doesn't fix the actual smell, but it does help...
Gratuitous attempt to attract help to my thread
Same (more or less) issue. What a pain! Good luck as you hunt down the problem.

Resurrection of a stinky old thread - Spark Plug Gap?
As it has warmed up (and I have finished up with the whole steering issue) I drove the Cruiser the other day and returned home smelling bad. I spoke to a hot rod buddy who suggested MSD ignition, which got me thinking about the ignition. So...
Drive it
Check the brakes and seat belts and go. I bought 40 and drove it home 800 miles in the heat of the summer. I checked the fluids, filled the tires and drove. It was hot, loud, bumpy, slow, uncomfortable and I'd do it again tomorrow if I could! Maybe when I get the steering back...
I'm in Bend if you get across the mountains and want to see one. I've got a 383 with a Ranger O/D (Made by Advance Adapters) and it fit easily and works well. There is a bit of whine at speed with the OD engaged, but you have to listen for it over the sound of the tires, wind, exhaust and radio...
95! 95++? As in 95 MILES per hour? In an FJ40? Wow. I hit 59 and it feels and sounds like it wants to disintegrate.
My old FJ55 felt a little better at highway speed. I suppose I could go faster in the 40 since the go pedal has lots more room, but it just doesn't feel like it should go any...
I run a pretty torquey 383 through my stock 4sp into the Toyota transfer case.
I did, in fact crack the t-case, but being frugal (so I thought) just bought a used transfer case housing, rebuilt the guts and stuck it back in the machine. I did install a T-Case saver (told by the seller that it...
Same Problem. Same storm (nasty one). Mine was the kick vents. They are now sealed for the winter. I used a thin bead of silicone. Now, if I can keep my kids from kicking them open when they are playing safari captain, they should stay watertight all winter.
I put new kick vent gaskets on them...
I have 4 very nice 33 x 12.5 x 15 Wild Country TXR's. They are in very good shape. You can have them with or without the alloy wheels that fit my 1980 FJ40.
Would love to trade them for same height but skinnier tires. I am in Central Oregon (Bend) but travel regularly from Bend west to the...
Jumper
I decided I am too lazy to deal with it right now. I guess I'll take grandma's advice and wear a sweater.
Appreciate the input. When I feel more up to it, I'll tear it apart and see where the problem is.
Now if I can get my headlights working....
Maybe a little more Pink Floyd...
After a late night return in the cold and dark, it occurred to me that now is the time to get serious about my heaters. I bought Shane's front repair kit (thanks!) and hope to get to that by January. The front heater blows enough to keep me from freezing, but it is the rear heater that has me...
I used that expanding foam stuff. Once it dried, I took a utility knife to it to clean up the edges. It is not terribly pretty, but it is hard to see unless you are on the hood, looking up at the roof. At least, that is what my wife says. :censor:
In need of some collective wisdom here. I've been working on my heater, and am in need of a few final parts. I've looked for a P/N on this. The gasket between the body and the blower motor crumbled - it seems to have been made of some sort of foam, and is now gone. Here is a picture:
And...
I wanted to be able to have front and rear speakers with or without the top on. My back speakers are mounted like the ones in #4. In front, I bought a cheesy set of supposedly water-resistant speakers (don't plan to test that claim!) on flea-bay. They are the separate woofer/tweeter type with...
I shot wd-40 and pb blaster in there every day for a week before I took mine off. probably overkill, but they came right off.
x2 on not reusing. I just don't trust myself with sharp or hot objects!
