So the Land Cruiser pulled down a vacuum tower this weekend. Don't ask... The tower looked like a giant funnel that weighs about 4,000 pounds and sits 40 feet in the air.
Anyway, I used a LONG ladder to attach a LONG chain to the top of the tower and then attached the chain to the back of...
Been a long time since I've visited the site. Wife divorced me and I lost the Cruiser for awhile. She recently bought another car and I finally got the Cruiser back. YIPPEE
Anyway, the transmission in my truck blew this week and I need a vehicle to temporarily haul my trailer around...
About 6 months ago I was involved in a collision with my '97 Land Cruiser. Light turned green, the guy in front of me went and then he suddenly slammed on his brakes for no reason, at precisely the moment my cell phone rang and I looked down to see who it was.
Long story short, I rear...
I have a 1973 FJ40. The body is shot, as in, the seats are almost falling through the floor. However, the engine runs great and the transmission, transfer case and axles all work just fine. The engine has aftermarket headers and a Weber carb. Over the years, I've picked up some parts for it...
Special thanks to RavenTai for helping me diagnose this.
All I knew was that in the summer months I would always have low oil pressure at idle and once in awhile the AC would kick off for no known reason. Keep in mind that during this time my water temp gauge always remained slightly below...
Where I come from, high water temperature and low oil pressure is a sign of a very worn engine.
That is why the readings below from my oil pressure / water temperature gauge really surprised me, (sorry for the low resolution, but this was taken with a camera phone).
It just cannot be...
Since adding the ARB bumber, my front end has dropped about 1". When I get around to adding a winch, I estimate my front end will drop another 1/2" at a minimum.
I am looking for a 1.5" spacer to level things out. From reading many posts on this board, it seems that some have gone with...
Some of you may remember my other thread regarding the extreme crankcase pressure buildup in a 1978 FJ40. Enough to pop the filler cap right off the valve cover.
The only thing I could think of that would cause this was a hole in one of the pistons - which others on this board confirmed...
Just a crazy hypothetical thought. I was thinking about how to make a FJ40 more manuverable in tight off road spots.
Would it be possible to install (another) front axle in the rear of a 40, fabricate some steering arms and have 4 wheel steeing?
Is this even possible?
A friend of a friend dropped off a 1978 FJ40 at my house in New Jersey because it broke down in route from North Carolina to Maine. Poor guy was desperate, dropped it off at my house cause he heard I knew something about Cruisers - (If only he knew what LITTLE I know). Anyway, now it is...
I have a 1973 F engine with Headers. Exhaust Manifold gasket has a section missing and needs to be replaced. Is this exhaust gasket the same as the regular exhaust manifold gasket or does the fact that this is a header mean I need a different gasket?
If it is different, which one do I need...
This is driving me crazy! 1973 FJ40 with an F engine. Despite 4 days of trying, I can get no spark.
I tested the points and they open and close as they are suppossed to - checked it with an Ohm meter. Checked the gap and that is fine too.
Tested the coil it doesn't seem to work...
Sorry for what could possibly be a stupid question.
Would a 4.2L fuel injected engine in a 1989 62 series fit in a 1973 FJ40?
If so, how difficult of a swap would be this be?
I have spent a lot on time on the 80 series forum as I have owned a 1997 LC for about 3 years now. Only criticism I have with my LC is that it is a little too big for some of the dense brush and overgrown trails in New Jersey. I had thought about getting a smaller open air vehicle to have fun...
In what year did Toyota switch over from the ball joint front axle to the birfield CV joint? I have a haynes manual that I have been reading and it says both joints were used on the 40 series, but it doesn't say which years came with which joint.
Are the ball joints inferior to the CV...
Been meaning to post these pictures for a LONG time. Finished my ARB install and decided to install a Stainless Steel tank between the frame rails for On Board Air. There is still plenty of room for a winch. Tank is filled by a suspension compressor from a mid 1980's Cadillac which I mounted...
I did a search on Turbo systems for the Land Cruiser. Found a page that lists Safari kits for the 4.5L engine in the 100 series. Huh? Is Toyota putting 4.5L engines in the 100 Series in some country outside of the US (presumably Australia)?
Assuming a turbo system is available for the 100...
I think this would be the perfect vehicle for a DIESEL conversion. Anyone up for the challenge?

Even if you are not that ambitious, someone has to have a gasser to throw in there.
"Bad Engine"...
I know next to nothing about the 40 series cruisers. I saw this ad for sale in New Jersey in a local classified along with a website link. Thought I would post the web link if anyone was interested.

Why does the Haynes Repair Manual cover Land Cruisers from the years 1980 through 1996 and NOT include 1997? Seems rather odd considering that the 1996 and 1997 are nearly identical (or so I thought).
Does anyone have this book and do they find it useful? I already have the factory...
