I have both side knuckle assemblies from a 68 and earlier FJ40. This was a ball and claw axle. I have the axle shafts as well. Make an offer as I have no use for this stuff and I know some people want to keep their 40's original. I am in Hawaii.
The wheel size depends on the tires you want to run. If you want to run interco tires, a 15" is the best option. Pretty much any other tire I'd go 16's or 17's. I like my KMC's except for the 36 bolts to put them together. They are 35#'s a piece and are well built. If you want to do weld...
If you want to stray away from the norm, a 78-79 F150 or Bronco box is huge and the steering is like driving a caddy. I have the bronco box, a custom pitman arm I made, 1.75" hydro assist ram, and a bored out stock pump on my 1uz. I only have an issue with the steering being kind of slow when...
Tell you the truth, droping a 4runner body on your current frame would probably be the best for durability and strength. The LC frame is beefy compared to the 4runners and the 3fe is a great engine.
If you were to swap the axles, they should just swap in place of the mini axles. The only...
You can use that 2.2 to build a 5sgte moster engine. There is a bellhousing that will allow you to bolt a w series trans to the engine, but they are hard to find over here. You could also try to find a BEAMS manual trans.
They are kinda gutless in the low end torque.
You won't like the OM617 and just to get 250 lb-ft, you have to spend a lot of money. 200 lb-ft is about the max with a stock pump and different turbo + intercooler set up. Trust me, get what you want and don't settle for less because you will regret it later.
That said, Isuzu, Mitsu, or...
They cause a lot of body roll with little input. I have alcan's with orbit eyes in both ends on my other 4runner. It also creates this weird surging feel with the spool in the rear. They do flex like crazy though.
Guess it depends on where you live too. Out here, my cousin says if you go to bare metal it will eventually rust because the of the salt in the air. He does some high quality body and paint work. He's also the reason I haven't painted my 4runner with rattle cans.
Thanks, it's a never ending project.
I have always had the 5.38's in the axles and yes, its a W56.
With 245/75/16 (30") tires I was going through gears fast and still didn't have much for power. The injection pump was still stock for quite a while. I toasted one engine on the highway...
Before I adjusted my injection pump, I would have to rev up the engine and slip the clutch to get it moving on hills from a stop. I would also have to drop down a gear and rev the crap out of the engine just to make it up a hill doing the speed limit (25mph+). The engines are gutless stock...
So far I have the stock KKK turbo, turned up IP (not finished tuning it), and bumped timing to 27º. I have 35's for daily driving and 5.38's in the axles. Its not that bad, but not stunning either. If you want all the details, go to the link in my sig.
I was disappointed with the stock...
I got my the injection pump on my 4runner's OM617 tuned better and it moves that thing around great on 35's with 5.38 gears. My 4runner is at least 5000 lbs right now. I have a lot of torque off idle and mid range now. I was going to install a gt2256v turbo, but I might be throwing this...
