    One of the hoses will be a vent or breather line, I am guessing that after fill up the fuel will slosh around and with no other escape route the fill cap is acting as the vent. Check for kinked or blocked lines in the breather hose

    if it starts every time when you hot wire the exciter wire (smaller one fron the ignition) you may have an issue with the ignition itself, check earth and hot sides on the ignition barrel

    Ammeter Questions

    There are 2x 5amp fuses for the stock ammeter located in the same harness as the fuseable link (about 3-4" away from the link), this would be a good starting point. Also IIRC there is a diode or resistor on the rear of some ammeters that fails hope this helps, and good luck
