Well, 2mbb - I ruined it! Lost the spring and tiny plunger when taking the top off - sure to be found when I kick it up this spring with my lawn mower somewhere on my front lawn.
In any case, a Jim C. rebuild was long overdue, so I yanked the whole thing off and am sending it out Monday...
Thanks guys - and 2mbb, thanks for the picks and your thoughts on what went wrong. I think you're exactly right, so I'm going to try to correctly assemble the needle valve/float right now.
It's hard to tell from the pic - is the needle valve/float part # 21301?
As the title says, I broke the stock carb on my 85 FJ60.
It was idling rough and with low vacuum, and my mechanic said I had "dirt in the carb". He suggested I try to take the top of the carb off and clean it out, before jumping into a pricey rebuild or replacement.
I did just that - first...
Hi guys,
I purchased the FJ60 tune up kit from Cool Cruisers of Texas, and it came with a carb diaphragm. From another tune-up kit, I also have what looks like a carb plunger.
Anyone have any tips on how to swap these parts out? I'm pretty good doing the simple tune-up work and oil changes...
Thanks guys - nice find on the part, Spike Strip! I was thinking of fabricating a custom job, but my welding/metalwork skills suck, so I figured I'd just buy it from 1sttoyotaparts.com. Pretty reasonable at $124 incl. shipping for the real part!
I'm just going to bring it to a local body shop...
Well, I brought it to the local muffler repair, and they welded my old piece back on for $20 - that's the good news.
The bad news is that when we were under the truck, the mechanic and I noticed the rear shock tube was cracked off the frame on both sides - part # 44 below:
I have no idea how...
It's about 11" from end to end, and about 1/2" in diameter.
The truck was making some funny clanging noises lately when I went over potholes, etc, and then this finally fell off. I also did feel like it was "swaying" a little more than usual, but maybe that's just suggestive thinking...
Went over a bump and this fell off my truck, but cannot figure out where it fell off of or what it does (did). Any insight?

Thanks for the tip, Jim...I'll chec the carb sight class.
Also, there's a new development on this: I noticed that if it's idling rough w/ low vac, and about to die, but I let it sputter and idle away without doing anything for a a few mins, the idle and vacuum will slowly return to perfect...
I put a new fuel pump on about a year ago, and a new fuel filter about 3 months ago, so those should be OK. Also, it runs and accelerates fine when driving - the only problem is when idling at a stoplight, where it'll either begin to idle very roughly, or just plain die on me.
Maybe I'll...
Thanks for your response, Jim. I tried to block off the VCV by clamping off or plugging all the lines that go into it, but this didn't seem to help at all.
In order to see if the VCV is the problem, should I be trying to simulate constant positive airflow, constant vacuum, or neither to the...
I checked my VCV, and it does seem to be old and partially clogged. I'd normally just buy a new one for the hell of hit, but then I saw they are around $70 from SOR, and I can't find anywhere else.
Does anyone else think this could really be causing the weird low vacuum/rough idle problems...
Thanks for the pic and the tip, Flip - I'll definitely check out the VCV as soon as I can. I'm hoping it's something like that, and not valves, etc. But I figure since it idles/vacuums perfect sometimes, and crappy others, it's gotta be something to do with the truck being cool or warm.
Two...
Ok, so here's the scenario:
* Oil on the outside of the PCV grommet and valve, and inside the valve a little too. I tried tightening the other end of the PCV pipe that goes into the intake, but it didn't seem to help.
* In-cab vacuum gauge perfect at about 19 when car first started...
I changed all the vacuum lines a couple years ago with the new blue silicone ones that folks talk about here - that definitely helped with the overall performance of the truck.
All the vac lines seem to be in good working order, minus the line from the pcv valve to the valve attached to the...
About a year ago, I installed an in-cab vacuum gauge. I saw that the reading was low, but steady, at around 14 Hg at idle. I did a lean drop on the carb, and it was perfect - steady at 18 at idle. It was that was for the whole year.
Then recently, I brought it to get new tires and an...
