Are 92 and 93 trucks interchangable??

I have a 93 xtra cab 4x4 and have the opportunity to buy a 92 xtra cab for a parts truck for $300. As far as I know everything is the same between the two. Does anyone have info to say otherwise? Thanks for any help. Eric

Vibration in 5th gear only....any ideas what it may be?

Just read in another thread that it isn't that bad of a job. I agree that toyota u-joints and bearings are worth the money, but I only drive my truck about 2000 miles a year and I only wheel in the FJ40. I know the u-joints in the truck are original, but Toyota quoted me $79 for each joint...

Vibration in 5th gear only....any ideas what it may be?

Tranny mechanic says tranny is fine. Looking into u-joints. Toyota are $78 each or I can get all 3 for rear driveline for about $90 at NAPA. I am a fairly competent mechanic, but don't mess with u-joints much. How difficult of a job is it to replace them? Any special tools? I have a vice...

    Really Strange Vibration!

I have had a similar problem for quite a while now. 93 xtra cab. Now there is a pinging in the driveline. A local transmission shop said the u-joints are bad. There are 3 in the rear driveline and they told me it would be $500 to change them all out because they are not held in with clips...

    axle armor

Just curious, If you are welding something similar to the photos onto the front axle, do you need to worry about heat generated? Do you need to remove the 3rd member to make sure no damage is done, or is that unnecessary?:meh:

    newbie........need a little help

Do you live in Oregon, or did you purchase it from someone in Oregon? Just curious. That is one sweet ride!

    replacement access/floor plates available?

I am not positive, but I believe Cool Cruisers in Texas might make aftermarket replacement floor panels.

Where can you get a t-case saver? I heard Pozer wasn't making them anymore, too back logged.

    going to loose my virginity

Toynut, Some things to consider are if you bought a stock cruiser would you want to do all the stuff that the "frankencruiser" has? I bought my 3rd 40 back in 1991 for $5k and it was in Oregon and didn't have any rust. 17 years later the body is in really good shape, but I mainly wheel in it...

T-case noise in 4wd only. Can you help?

My fj is a 79 and the drivetrain is all stock escept for the motor. There is a grinding sound coming from the t-case when it is in 4 hi or low. The hubs are not locked and in 2wd the noise is gone. When it comes to gearboxes I am really good at changing the oil and that is about it. Can...

    Builds 2F + (3F-E) = 2FETI Into My FJ40

Matt, Have you considered installing a pre-luber type system on the motor to build up the oil pressure each time you start the motor? When I built my SB350 many years ago I installed a preluber that tied into the ignition and when I turned the key to accessory it would build up the oil...

Vibration in 5th gear only....any ideas what it may be?

Thanks for the input everyone. I will check the fluid level. I check it at every oil change, but you never know. I will also check the mid bearing as well. Hopefully I can hold off until the summer so I don't get rained on in the driveway. I need to change out a front axle anyway...

Vibration in 5th gear only....any ideas what it may be?

Hi All, I jumped over from the FJ40 site to ask a question about my 93 truck. It's a V-6 5 speed with 32" tires and 4" lift. It just turned 200k a few months ago. The problem is that for a while now when I shift into 5th gear a low growling/vibration type sound comes from what sounds like...

UGLY BETTY-71 FJ HFS Lift Installed & BFGs

I just put a 4" lift on this summer (not HFS but Safari) and the ride was pretty rough for the first week. I had to put my tool box, spare parts, and fluids in the back to add some weight. It helped a lot, but I run it topless also. The weight of the hard top may do the trick. Just give it a...

Ring and Pinion strength 3.83 vs 4.11

So it is a reassignment of priorities again. I guess the most logical progressions would be Bobby longs, lockers with new pinions front and rear, and then whatever direction I choose to go with t-case gearing. Unless of course I break something else and need to rework it. I fully believe in...

Ring and Pinion strength 3.83 vs 4.11

So Venpick, I understand what you are saying. Going to 4.88's will take a huge strain off of the drivetrain, axles, and help out in the engine performance dept. as well. I agree that I don't want to be pulling apart diffs every summer, but to do it right I would have to have both r&p sets as...

Ring and Pinion strength 3.83 vs 4.11

I have a 79 FJ40 w/ 4" SUA and SBC 350. After doing some research here in the tech area I found out that my stock axles have 3.83 gears in the pumpkins. I always thought the 40's came with 4.11's. I am planning on putting 35's on this summer and my next upgrade will be a rear locker ( at...

Mounting Fuse block for painless wiring harness

I have also mounted mine on the left side of the glove box. I had plenty of wire to run across to the gauge cluster, but mainly I put it there because if I ever get water into the cruiser it is one of the hightst points to mount it, unlike down by the stock location. I will admit it is a...
