    1978 FJ40 Carburetor and Vacuum

Fixed it! There was a problem with the choke/fast idle complex of linkages at the back of the carb. When operating the throttle linkage from under the I could reproduce the symptom - when the throttle opened past 1/3 way, the engine bogged same as when driving. A little more searching and...

    1978 FJ40 Carburetor and Vacuum

May 1978 build date with California emissions starts and idles perfectly, but won't go faster than around 10 MPH. No stutter or backfire, more like starving for fuel. Attached photos show what is under the air cleaner. Aftermarket carb without fuel return line. Vacuum from the carb hooked...

Keep or remove California SMOG components?

@BIRDMAN84 how did it turn out? It looks like you were making progress in February - did you complete the de smog and are you happy with it? I am still debating whether to do the same on my 05/78. At least part of the consideration for me is the need to adjust the valves and replace the exhaust...

    Keep or delete the smog?

Although the Cruiser was in Cali for its entire 44 year life, it is now in a non-smog state. Legally no longer necessary. a search on "desmog" turn up a couple million threads - each with a different take on desmogging. it seems, however, that the '78 must be unique because many threads discuss...

    Keep or delete the smog?

Going in for some mainten and cleaning, and I am debating whether to keep all the smog equipment On my '78 40. It looks like the refuse pile behind a hose factory in there (not to mention all the wiring that needs tidying), but it is all functional and just passed Cali testing and inspection...

    Blower motor.

Thanks for the information. I've been able to locate the sensor and controller, and have tested the blower which works very well. I'll pull the sensor out to clean and reattach the lead. if anyone knows where I can buy the end of the blower housing that would be great. There are sellers of the...

    Blower motor.

Thank you Hard Way. It's amazing that such a thing was even needed! But now I have a new search term so maybe I can find parts and etc. I would assume that this white device is the sensor? The PO must have rewired it to a dashboard switch because a wire, long since broken, leads through the...

    Blower motor.

For what it's worth, the engine bay is a MESS of wiring from the PO(s?). Check out the spaghetti over by the battery! Anyway, as bad as it looks it just passed Cali smog a couple weeks ago.

    Blower motor.

Searching catalogs and internet in general hasn't helped my discover what this blower was supposed to do. Left side of my '78 Cali-spec FJ40.
