    Builds The Architect's '77 FJ40

Wandering steering requires a wee bit more than shocks. Start with the basics.

I’m only in about 25 or 30 miles so far and really enjoying them. And I’m comparing this with the cheaper yellow Bilsteins that came on the rig when I bought it. But it’s a massive difference, especially getting into steep driveways, over rolling speed bumps, and even a quick trailer or two.

    Slight vibration after 2.5” lift

Yep Rick, saw that and was reading more on what you did there. Always an amazing build :)

    Slight vibration after 2.5” lift

By eyesite, the pinion is pointing up a bit. Pic below but may be hard to tell. This is post 2.5” lift install. It was hard to find a flat surface with my cheap angle finder but was seeing about 2-4 degree angle at the pinion (again, if I am even doing this right). No shims used to date...

    Slight vibration after 2.5” lift

…. After placing an order online for the DC driveshaft, I was talking to a buddy and he had mentioned to me that the double cardan may bind if I didn’t have at least 15° slope with that range maxing out at 22°. Someone at Tom’s told him this, so he opted for a single. Now that my stress...

    Slight vibration after 2.5” lift

@GA Architect - Yup, took the rear DS off yesterday afternoon, and the noise went completely away, and it makes sense because as I eyeballed the angle of the pinion, it was not parallel to the transfer case. Now with that resolved, I’m about to order a Tom Woods DC rear DS. Just gotta measure...

Thanks @Mark Jennings you are a wealth of knowledge! You provided Some good help in the archives as well.

    Makes sense…early morning for me

    Slight vibration after 2.5” lift

I’ve been doing a lot of research on the typical vibration after one installs a lift (I have OME 2.5” lift with Bilstein shocks, both DS balanced recently, and new u joints on rear one, transfer case rebuilt). I’m now starting to look at pinion angles and just need some guidance on the best way...

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

Finally, got that bastard…cheater bar did the trick. And TOP quality penetrating oil.

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

For the life of me, I cannot get this side to budge… The other side turns freely on the end of the tie rod, but this one with many hours of soaking cannot seem to budge off the drag link. May have to resort to removing steering wheel to compensate for the off center at 2pm mark.

My truck is not turning one way from what I can tell. It’s the steering wheel center that is off. That to me speaks to drag link - which is what I was thinking of from the beginning.

@pb4ugo so this rod/guy? Loosen coupler/clamp here and at passenger side (meaning both ends) and turn rod to right to lengthen or left to shorten (steering wheel will also turn either way depending on direction) Or are you referring to the drag link rod? Sorry, just trying to make sure I’m...

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

Random question for anyone who is still watching this thread… when doing your standard 2.5 inch lift on these rigs, would there be anything that would affect the steering wheel centering with this instillation? My mind may be playing games on me, but it feels like the steering wheel now is...

Thanks! I think with all jobs like this once you do it a first time, you feel like you could do another one and another one and another one down the road and even shave a few hours off the job.

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

All finished and initial torque settings done. Will check after a few weeks. Greased up and double checked everything. All in all, good experience but those pins…they are Satan’s spawn. Never want to do that again. Right now, 3” raise and fairly consistent on all corners…will see where she...

Do people actually look for old factory springs?

What an experience. Never learned so much about this classic rig in my life. Really good experience, invited some friends, had a few beers, a lot of laughs, a competition who could remove the rear pin/fixed mounting the quickest (I won with the die grinder). Not done yet, but just tightening...

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

well…wisdom teeth out. I don’t know what the right combination of tools for all this was but I think the cutting discs were the big heroes of the day. I went through three of them and was a little spooked to try the 6 inch because of the RPM range doesn’t match my grinder. But I still have the...

    Holy hell…43 year old bushings

So funny… I finally got a clue after looking at the way this was situated, and I basically cut the shackle in half and it completely dropped in my lap… Had to walk away and get an ice pack for the you know what’s.
