Thanks - I'll definitely work on the other fluids next. Since this is my 1st time going through this, I keep having to drive back to the store for things I don't have...like an oil filter wrench. Or, buying the wrong size of the tool and then having to go back yet again ... Hopefully next time...
@desmocruiser Yea I've read just about every possible opinion on oil. Seems to be getting to the level of politics or religion! I've also read the zddp additive is important but not critical.
@Spike Strip for sure not to overtighten. Just until it stops without force and then a wee bit more...
Yep - it's 10 qt. There's definitely nowhere near a full load of oil but I was sure to get one big enough for future changes.
@desmocruiser I got mobil 1 10w-30. For me up in CT that should easily cover all the temps I'll be driving in, and with it in the garage the temp doesn't get too low in...
@OhioFJ - thanks! I have no idea about that cover ... this is my 1st (and likely last) BAT purchase, and every spot I look uncovers a dozen new things that are wrong. I'm learning a lot as I go through this process, so I guess that education is a benefit. I've never worked on trucks before so...
Hi forum people,
Haven't been able to do anything on my truck since last fall, outside of small jaunts around town. Just getting to my 1st oil change since I picked up the money vacuum last summer (yes, I know, I waited too long). I'm following the instructions but am not 100% confident I know...
That was my assumption - that I'd need to either glue the busted piece or maybe I can 3d print and glue a custom piece there instead. The whole metal shaft was glued into that corner and the busted piece looks like it was just glued to kinda keep it there but the glue was doing all the work.
@Green Bean looking forward to hearing how this goes. My parking brake might as well not exist - doesn't do a thing. It's on my short list to work on this winter since I won't drive most of the CT winter with all the garbage they put on the roads.
Been months since I've had a free day, so I decided to fix the stuck odometer. Following this thread which is just awesome (thanks @baas!!!) but I ran into a couple of questions just from taking it apart. It is filled with dust and gunk, the tens and hundreds were so frozen it took me about 45...
Sort of hijacking this old thread ... taking out the instrument cluster for the first time. I got it mostly out (img-252) and the wiring is a mess. I got the black cluster plug and the speedo plug disconnected, and then came to the ammeter wiring connector (img-254). Before touching anything I...
Yep I see a lot of flaming of the SA trucks. I have no interest in flipping - just something I can enjoy learning, working on, AND using. There are always going to be purists, which is fine for them, but doesn't mean thats the only path to ownership.
The rear sliding windows are great - some...
Frame # matches the VIN plate, at least. Who knows if its legitimate though (see pic). I also found a stamp on the left side of the engine with the # 61010 that looks like it could be Nov/Dec '75 (couldn't find the tab on the right side where most of the guidance said to look).
Yep - def going...
I'm kind of getting that impression @MadmanCruiser that its a bit of a catch-all from a lot of places. I kind of expected that considering the price I got it at. I wasn't looking for a show car or something perfect - just something I can have fun in, learn how to work on cars, and my kids can...
I picked up what was sold as a 1976 FJ40 a couple of months ago and now that I'm starting to look at sourcing some replacement bits and pieces, I'm trying to nail down exactly what I have. :)
The PO who imported from Columbia had a replacement VIN # put in place by North Carolina DMV (its a...
Thanks for the info! I knew about the tub being a replacement ... the drive train comments are a bit concerning, mostly because I brought it to a local mechanic first (they primarily restore Land Rovers, but still) and they didn't mention anything about it. Makes me a lot less confident about...
Not sure why I'd need to buy a star - I posted a pic at the top of this thread. Maybe I can only post 1 per thread? I'll look around.
I'm definitely having fun with it -- lots of driving around the neighborhood with the kids and friends. Built an electric hoist yesterday (mud link to youtube...
Been a few weeks since I've been able to respond...appreciate all the info from you all!
@Skreddy - the noise doesn't happen when off or idling - just when in motion and shifting from 3rd to 4th. Listening to it more, it might a very quick gear grinding noise but very brief. I haven't been out...
1st time owner, have very little experience working on cars ... this will be fun. Picked up what I think is a pretty decent deal after shopping for a long time - originally from Columbia, imported to North Carolina and reworked in 2020, shipped to me in CT couple of weeks ago). It runs pretty...
Just bought my 1st - 1976 fj40 (columbian import - getting it shipped up from NC to CT). Anyone have suggested / recommended shops along the shoreline? I'm just east of New Haven. Specifically want to get a roll cage installed to start. Don't plan on doing much offroading - if anything would be...
I think their point was that BAT is good for disposable cash buyers who dont want to put in the work looking for something at or below market value...that BAT = easy button so there's a premium to pay for that.
I use it as another data point while looking, and I find the comments can be useful...
There seems to be about a 20-25% premium on BAT purchases over what I see elsewhere. Not sure if the buyers there just have more $ to throw around or what. This one went for $29k...for me to pay that price and ship it across country is too much. The dark green '79 Colombian import from yesterday...
