I had a slipped harmonic balancer: the outer part was misaligned with the center, the rubber part ripped ... happened probably due to a seized AC-pulley.
To find out confirm, that TDC indicated by the harmonic balancer is really TDC. If you skip tearing of the valve cover, remove spark plug No1...
Found the exhaust gasket after the cat crumbled to pieces. Now replaced ... I will report, if it solved the problem permanent!
Thank you for all your valuable comments ... Simon
CEL came first on while drivin heavy dunes, Throttle pos. maybe half, not more than 10 km/h (6,2 mi/h), gearbox locked in 2. gear (2nd start and 2) then again 2 days later, same conditions. Then 3 days later constant driving on highway 110 km/h (68,3 mi/h). That one was constant for 2 days and...
Thank you for your efforts.
In the remoteness of the central sahara (comparable to the trails of central Australia) I maybe get a little obsessed with the reliability of my vehicle.
Please be lenient ;-)
I will try to uncover the mistery by dayly driving it here in central Europe! I will...
No vacuum leaks, no poor idling, idling @650 rpm, fuel consumption was ok with 23 Liters/100 km in heavy dunes and 16 l/100 km on the highway.
Yes, I have all the FSMs.
I would love to give you more, like a CEL-Code ... but they are not obtainable ... when I check with the paperclip method they...
97 FZJ 80, European spec., delivered to Finland, no OBD2, 1FZ with 360 000 km on the clock.
for the last 2000 km (starting in the dunes of Grand Erg Oriental/Sahara desert) the CEL came on intermittendly. When trying to get a code with the paperclip method: continuous blinking and after...
Above is what I found: the bumper/carrier is not the australian heavy rail type, where you can attach you hilift jack on every good looking nook. It is lightwight, the wings are from 1,5 mm (0.059") steel and the overall weight 16 kg (35lbs) for the bumper and 23 kg (50lbs) for the tire carrier...
Yes, I have one ... and I am quite happy with it.
You can theoretically mount the carrier without the "bumperhalves" (see 534240), but then you have to cut a hole in the original plastic bumper or go without it (might be roadworthy only in most of Africa ;-)))).
The carrier mounts to the frame...
Thats what I bring for a Sahara (thats a bit more remote compared to the middle west) trip:
Belts
Knucklestuds/Nuts
1 CV Joint
U-joint bearings
Front Wheel Bearing kit
Solenoids for fuel pump/EFI
fusible link(s)
Fuel pump
cooling hoses
thermostat
radiator cap
valve cover seal...
1. An airtank saves time ... while changing from tire to tire the compressor fills the tank, the pressure-difference fills the next tire much faster.
2. Way better chances to refill a tire, that has slipped from the bead due to very low pressures, without using those materialmurdering and...
My solution in the engine bay:
the airtank reduces the filling time significantly - the time to switch the hoses to the next tire is used to pressurize the tank
a Y-piece and two hoses equally filling each axles tires safes filling time further since the common bottleneck are in this...
There was the overtightening ... aluminium vs steel .. and a running motor with a loose plug stresses the remaining plug holding threads as well
I would helicoil or even better Würth time sert the threads ...
With lots of kilometers in the edaien of sahara I would say:
The most important single upgrade in sand are tires - tall with a good sidewall ... 7,5R16 or 255/85R16, Mud terrain last longer e.g. BFG KM3. Those you can deflate to 0,8 to 1 bar (11-14 psi ;-) without damage
Second is suspension...
When the front differential is locked your rig drives only straight on, no matter what .... I would prefer to decide by myself, when to engage and disengage the front differential lock .... imagine, what will happen, when you hit a small patch of ice before a turn ... the automatic front locker...
