    Electrical upgrade options and ideas

I am planning to replace the wiring harness on my BJ40 and have seen replacements like the SOR harness that has (2) additional circuits (14 circuits vs 12). And I have see Painless with many more circuits. I use my car primarily for camping and sightseeing and I am curious what some cool ideas...

    BJ40 Wiring Harness & Connectors

I have a BJ40 in Costa Rica that I am wanting to replace all the wiring on. The car is all original. I am not a mechanic but I have one in CR. I read that wiring kits require the reuse of original connectors. Being a novice, I am assuming this means using new OEM connectors and not the 40+ year...

How big is the BJ market in the US?

I have met several FJ owners in Texas who say they would love to have a diesel powered BJ if they could ever get their hands on one. Being a newbie here I am curious how strong this sentiment is in the US and if the BJ's are really a sought after model in the land of gas?

    BJ40 Parts Availability

Is anyone aware of a source that specializes in BJ parts in Costa Rica and or the US? I have a BJ40 in Costa Rica and unlike the US where we have many companies providing new and used parts for gasoline powered cars, I have been unable to find a similar source in Costa Rica. I have purchased...

    Underpowered BJ40 or drivetrain problem?

Byron, thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I will ask the mechanic again for a detailed explanation of what he did or did not due. The other issue that I think is related to this is with the accelerator linkage. The mechanic did tell me that they had to modify the linkage a bit...

    Underpowered BJ40 or drivetrain problem?

hi Byron, thank you for the information. This is a reply I got from the mechanic here in Costa Rica: "...there is nothing about the new brake system that is connected to the motor because we are using a new alternator with vacuum generator and not using vacuum from the motor. The only additional...

    Underpowered BJ40 or drivetrain problem?

I am not a mechanic, so can you explain why it looks like the springs are on backward? I do recall the mechanic here in Costa Rica mentioning something about having to reverse something with the suspension to keep the wheels from hitting (I believe the fender wells) once he installed OME system.

    Underpowered BJ40 or drivetrain problem?

I just completed some upgrades on my ‘77 BJ40 down in Costa Rica. New OME suspension, added power steering & 4-wheel disc, and lots of minor repairs and cosmetic stuff. Big question I now have after finally getting to drive it regularly is “is the engine seriously this lie-powered or do I have...

    12v or 24v BJ40

I am clearly not a mechanic which will be obvious by this question. Can someone confirm for me that my BJ40 as seen in this picture is a 12v system?

Recommendations for upgrading/repair BJ 40 in Vosta Rica

Thanks. I could forego the AC but not having any air circulation when the windows are up and its raining and windows are fogging up is a downer. Regarding the actual repairs, any insight into mechanics here that know Cruisers? Is it worth the effort to import stuff like Old Emu suspension...

Recommendations for upgrading/repair BJ 40 in Vosta Rica

Having driven my newly acquired ‘77 BJ40 for a week now in Costa Rica, I am looking for recommendations and opinion on steps to repairs/upgrades. The car is a solid daily-driver. I do not have the money or time (for it to be down for a significant amount of time) for a full restoration, but to...

    Costa Rican '77

Oh yes, it was checked out by two different mechanics, one my friend brought in and the other who is a retired Toyota mechanic from the dealership in San Jose where the original owner took it for service. They claim that other than the wheels and decals, it is has not been modified. Not being a...

    Costa Rican '77

Hola, thank you for the reply! So 70 series turn signals? Interesting. I appreciate your offer to answer more questions as I am certain to have some😎. My friend who picked the car up for me in San Jose had no issues driving it the 3 1/2 hours to Guanacaste where I live. Other than saying it was...

    Costa Rican '77

I will be moving to Costa Rica this summer and have been looking for an FJ40 for awhile. I lucked into this '77 from the original owner who has service records dating back to the seventies. Unfortunately, my new passport did not arrive in time and I was unable to pick it up in person, but I will...
