Today I took the radiator and the intercooler out of the support and trimmed the angle iron and hit it with a wire wheel and painted the support.
Checked the support studs and they were square with the bottom of the support then looked closer at the the mounts on the frame and they were...
Drilled and set 2 riv-nuts.
Took everything back apart and cut off the cross bar and the top mesh
Ground off the spot welds and metal flush with the support and see the twist
Had to open the hole up for the drain valve to clear
Before putting the intercooler and radiator I put the...
I have spent the last two days working on the cooling stack. The radiator support was badly tweaked so that to get it as straight as I could.
Fitted the support and radiator with the shroud. The radiator is a 4 core and the shroud is for the spall fan.
Bought new pads and hard ware for...
I have a 4 core replacement for the stock FJ40 radiator so it sorta fits in the radiator support after some tweaking. I will have to make the hole for the drain valve bigger so that it does not hit and can be used.
I got some 2.5 x 2.5 angle iron and started attaching it to the radiator...
With the mods like power steering and completely changing the steering I am not sure what it will be like to drive when it is done. I don't remember hitting my head or my knees getting in and out. But I have not driven it since 1991 when I was in my 30s and now I am 65.
My fabrication skills have really degraded in the last 30 years but that looks like a better way to go. My radiator support is tweaked from hitting the F350. But I was able to get all of the bolts in the holes.
I have a intercooler from Summit and looks like a good size from top to bottom and...
I am 6'-3" and at work I am always finding pipes to hit my hard hat on.
When I went up to Montana to get my adapters Stephen asked my what I was doing driving a FJ40. I told him that head room was not a problem but being to close to the fire wall was an issue with the gas pedal. I am going...
I was working on my new radiator and got it and the shroud mounted to the frame and started working on mounting the intercooler. It is 3" thick and I don't thing the bib will engage the bolts on the aprons before it hits the intercooler.
Did you have to move your radiator toward the motor?
Your progress is looking good.
I like the hoist for the top. I would still hit my head on the tubs that go into the tub. My rafters in my barn are over 16 feet so it would work with out me hitting my head.
I was able to have all the needed parts for the hand brake on the output shaft of the split case when I ordered it.. So the needed parts are available.
When I removed the emissions from my 78 I replaced the carb with a Rochester 2 jet and it had a mount for different jets. When I was in college I blew the head gasket and pulled the head for a valve job. I asked the shop to mill the head and I didn't know how much and trusted them to take the...
I put a R2.8, H55 with split transfer case that has a 3:1 low range in my 78 FJ40. I also have 4:11 gears. According to Cummins with 35" tires at 80 mph I should be turning 2650 rpms.
It is not road ready so can not verify if that is correct. With the 2F and 4 speed it was wound pretty tight...
I converted a FJ60 axle to a full floater using a flange from FROR, with new front spindles, and front wheel hubs from my front axle and then put new perches on the housing to line up with the FJ40 springs. The flanges from FROR have mounting points for Toyota calipers.
Then got a big brake...
