x2 on the fuel pump possibility, I just re placed my electric fuel pump and no longer have the problem of going over 50 for a long period of time and bucking. I also emptied out the fuel tank and blew out the lines to make sure they were clean. Good Luck

thanks cruiserpilot I will try the cap first and then expierment with the octane if needed. Down in South Texas we are still in the low 90s and yet to see our first cold front.
One year cruiser vet with a 73 fj40. PO changed out motor to a 78 2f with a asian new carb. Has both fuel pumps(mech and electric). It also has a fuel pressure regulator(set at 3). Fuel filters are new.I have replaced all the soft lines.

Have you checked your emergency lights to see if they work? If not check the switch behind the console and check for plug to make sure it is making good contact. Just one more idea of many that could be your problem. good luck
