Ignition rod fixed but steering wheel misaligned

That ignition rod broke. Mechanic fixed it but said they had to remove the steering wheel and they put it back about 20 degrees off. Big goof up. Second time it's close, but still off enough that I will be annoyed every time I drive it. The mechanic will try a third time, but is saying it's a...

    Fuel spurting from filler cap

Drove from sea level to 8k feet in the hot desert. I stopped to get something from the trunk and smelled fuel. I saw vapor coming from the fuel filler door so I opened the door and fuel was spurting out of the tightened cap. And without thinking I opened the cap and fuel sprayed out until I...

    P0125 on the road

As I speak I’m on the road from LA to Tahoe. Got a CEL P0125 Research says O2 sensor or coolant sensor. Are there any side of the road diagnostics or repairs I should try? If I monitor engine temp gauge do you see any danger continuing my road trip?

Where’s this ATF leak coming from?

A couple months ago I replaced the valve cover gaskets and I’m fairly certain the leaks are gone. But I’m still getting drips on my driveway. I’ve circled the low points that are wet: Here’s a closeup of the bolt making me think it’s ATF: Are there any common ATF leak points that I should...

    Disable car to prevent theft

Anyone have tricks for disabling the car or preventing theft of a 2004 LX? I’ve always worried about leaving the car alone off road. Of course being off road means there are very few thieves around. And maybe these cars are already hard to steal. But humor me. Thanks.

    Front turn signal bulb

Why am I having a hard time finding a replacement for my front turn signal bulb? 2002 LX470 The dead one is this Koito brand. Is it OEM? Where do I get a replacement?

    Undercarriage wash tips

I live in Southern California so yes this is a question of privilege! Maybe 1-3 days a year I’ll go up to the mountains to see snow. I don’t go enough to apply undercarriage film to protect the car from rust but I feel like I should still do something. Undercarriage wash at the automated car...

Rougher idling after timing belt change

2002 LX 146k miles. I (not a mechanic) changed the timing belt, water pump, fan bracket, serpentine belt, and pulleys. When I’m idling at the stop light, it’s a little rougher than before. Not like it’s misfiring or anything, just vibrating a little more, enough that you’d see ripples holding a...

    Leaky oil drain plug

Just did an oil change. When I was tightening the drain plug, I might have torqued too hard because it felt like the plug slipped about 1/16 of a turn. The drain plug uses a flat washer. Now there’s a little drip. Is there an easy fix? By easy I mean no tapping, no inserts, no replacement...

    I’m a timing belt whiner

Another timing belt thread… but a little different. Will anyone else fess up and say they hated doing their timing belt and that they will never do it again?! I’m doing my timing belt, water pump, radiator, and related parts. I was planning to do the cam and crank seals but honestly I lost...

    Alternatives to cam pulley holder

I can’t imagine everyone who has changed the cam seals would have a cam pulley holder. So what did you use instead and how did it work? Since I’m changing the timing belt I thought I could use the old one to hold the cam pulley while putting an impact wrench to the bolt. Would that work...

    Fan bracket vs. fan pulley

Why should I buy the entire fan bracket assembly when the fan pulley is available? On Partsouq: $121 for fan bracket 16307-50012 $30 for fan pulley 16371-50040

Evidence of water pump and timing belt replacement

My relatively new-to-me LX has 145k miles. It’s unknown whether the water pump and timing belt have been replaced. No sticker. No maintenance records. No history on Lexus owners. Seller was an agent of the PO who was sick. This forum suggested some inspection points and looking for tool...

    Coolant temp gauge not working

Needle is stuck at the bottom of the gauge. What should I be checking? In what order so that I spend my time efficiently?

Fuse pull test by electrical dummy

I think I have a parasitic draw that has drained my battery. I have a cheap multimeter from Harbor Freight and my knowledge of electricals is worth just as much. I could use some hand holding to do the fuse pull test. I’m an electrical dummy so please don’t laugh! Am I doing this first part...

    Keyfob lock issue

2001 LX. Symptom: Sometimes keyfob controls the locks fine. Sometimes the keyfob locks only the back doors. Sometimes the keyfob lock button doesn’t work at all. Background that may be relevant or not: Three times times my battery drained in the past few months and each time I thought i found...

    Labor cost of starter replacement

What should be a reasonable labor cost from an independent shop for a starter replacement? Just the labor since I bought a reman OEM starter for $120. Much thanks

    Starter sounds like crunching can

Couple days ago my LX started making a loud crunching noise whenever I start the car. Sounds like someone stomping on an aluminum can. Short and loud. If I turn the key and let go at just the right moment right when the engine engages, no noise. If I hold the key a split second longer, noise...

    2002 transmission fluid exchange questions

Baselining my new-to-me LX. I’ve already done motor oil, transfer case, front diff, rear diff, and power steering. Next is the ATF exchange through the cooler line with Mobil 1 MV. I want to have everything ready before I start because I just like being over prepared! 1. I’m reading that 98-02...

    Hatch edge trim

PO did a subpar job putting some trim on the edge of the rear hatch. What might this be for? I’m thinking of just removing. All I can think of is that they didn’t want to scratch it up while loading and unloading stuff. Or they’re already covering up existing scars.
