    Cable access through bulkhead.

The nylon gland has been fine with regards heat damage for over a year now. A simple reversible modification. I also add a 20amp aux socket where the locker switch should be, chose this location as I hate blanking plates which are a constant reminder that you failed as a human and should have...

1HD-T - Possible air leak from fuel primer ?

I now have this issue, having to pump the primer/filter head after leaving the car overnight! This first started 2 days after fitting a new fuel filter (long-23303-56040) with the original primer/filter head (without heater). I then replaced the primer/ filter head (with heating element)...

Hdj81 fuel heater a lost cause?

I have now have brand new filter/pump heads with heaters from both an 80 series and 100 series Diesel engine. The mounting holes for the head have the same C-C, the hand pump diaphragms appear to be the same diameter (measured externally) both have 12mm fuel inlet barbs but the 80 series has a...

    Cable access through bulkhead.

I have an HDJ81 (RHD auto) which means conveniently, there is a ~36mm hole (plugged with a rubber grommet) right through the bulkhead where a clutch master cylinder would have been fitted. I had the idea of using a 36mm gland and 21mm convoluted tubing in which to run cables from the engine bay...

Hdj81 fuel heater a lost cause?

I can report, that the heating elements fitted to the 100 series (23910-17060) and 78/79 series (23910-17080) do not fit the 80 series pump/filter head. The screw holes do not line up and the element is either too tall or not oriented correctly as the outer case does not sit flush with the body...

    Fuel filter 1HD-FT

Any idea if the elements are of differing construction and filtration efficiency? How do they compare to the 23390-YZZAB which is also apparently suitable for 1HD-FT?

    Oil filter bypass 1 HD-FT

Yes, HDJ81 is the JDM RHD. Not sure where the Front/Rear difflock ECU is situated but the CDL ECU should be behind the cruise control ECU near the fuse box in drivers footwell.

    Oil filter bypass 1 HD-FT

HDJ81 has full time 4wd with a centre differential and viscous coupling, the only electrical components are the centre diff lock (CDL) and front/rear diff locks if you have them. Your CDL ECU should be on right hand side of the drivers footwell, if you have cruise control it will be behind the...

Hdj81 fuel heater a lost cause?

The 80 series elements 23910-17020 & 23910-17040 appear to be out of production. The 100 series element 23910-17060 appears very similar but has a very short lead and the white plastic around the element is more open and the outer case is different where the wires enter. The 78 series element...

    Oil filter bypass 1 HD-FT

If you use Genuine Toyota oil filters (90915-30002) then you already have both full flow and bypass filter elements on your engine! Just regular oil changes with decent oil and OEM filters, don't muck about with additives. Change ATF every year by dropping 4L from sump and top up.

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

I took the air box out and inlet hose off the turbo today, there is no axial play of the shaft and only the slightest radial play, it is comparable to a 1-year old TD04 I have in the garage. I also fitted 4 steel blanking plates in total to both sides of the EGR valves but the noise is still...

    Electric Fan worth it?

Or even variable pitch fan blades that can adjust automatically according to cooling demand and the ability to feather and disengage the fan at highway speeds.

    Electric Fan worth it?

Fitting a CVT to a viscous fan clutch might help increase low engine speed cooling performance if such a thing exists?

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

That looks nasty! You can defiantly hear the bearing screeching in that video. I haven’t had the chance to check the spinning assay for play yet but I did notice that the underside of the diaphragm of the forward EGR valve is considerably more sooted than the other. Perhaps this slight...

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

I recorded another video under the bonnet stalling the TC in drive to load the engine. noise does appear to originate around the turbo and all hoses appear intact and clamps tight. Think I will pop the inlet hose off and check axial play of shaft next. Chances are, the 24 year old turbo is...

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

Thank you, I will need to make a day of it I think. Only under load yes, so hard to replicate with the bonnet up. Could try loading engine with foot on brake and in drive? ;)

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

All standard, but I have disabled the EGR. So the noise isn’t normal?

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

Think I can be heard better in this video.

    Whistling 1HD-FT.

I have owned a diesel 4.2 24v (1HD-FT) Landcruiser 80 series (HDJ81) for over a year now and it has always made a strange whistling sounds on moderate to full throttle irrespective of RPM. I started noticing it more recently when on holiday as the LC was fully laden and ascending steep hills. I...
