I need that carb for my first ever 40 ... if you're willing to ship. I could even buy the shipping label and email so all you have to do is box it up, then print and tape the label on.
Well, it’s looking more and more like I’ll be able to pull off a fresh 2F before SAS8. Big work ahead. I’m in the deep end of the pool now and have no idea what I’m doing. Send help.
For example, these are on the way to me from a country the State Department isn’t too fond of:
Steering box rebuild done except for adjusting the top nut.
Fine grained detail can be found in the thread linked above. Now I need a time to install. That’s going to include 2-4 hours of cleaning ATF off the undercarriage - it’s everywhere. I need to pull the lower leaf spring plate and the...
Humpty Dumpty is back together, but the top nut is not adjusted yet.
Getting the ball bearings in was the trickiest part. I put the internal shaft into the piston until the it was one groove past the hole in the middle of the piston. Then I started feeding the BBs in. After putting in 3-5 I...
Yes but also I was going to braze that draincock onto the radiator. Are you imagining a step-up fitting to get from the small threads for the plug to the larger threads of the draincock shown?
@Spook50
Funny thing happened today. Voltmeter is rhythmically bouncing up and down a very little bit. Happens with engine on or off, I pulled every fuse one by one, including my aftermarket fuses, and it still happens. The only one that affected it was the engine fuse, which made it worse...
That was kind of the spot I was working on most recently. That box is a big honkin’ thing, eh? There’s a couple other spots I have in mind and another box setup I want to test.
Even if that one is too big, it’s pretty high quality stuff.
The problem keeps coming back to space. The 3FE engine bay isn’t as tightly crammed as a modern engine bay, but it makes inefficient use of the given space. A widget bolted here, a widget bolted there. No big open holes like in a 2F engine bay. I’ll get it done though.
When I replaced the suspension on my previous 60 - it was an 83 model with a build date in very early 83 I think - I ran into some goofy stuff with it having some features of a later "84+" axle. It was such that I started thinking somebody had maybe swapper the rear axle out. Perhaps the rear...
A note about that - it goes in the block drain of a 2F/3F. The original radiators have what appears to be a nut or something with wrench flats around the drain plug, but DO NOT try to twist it out with a socket - it's brazed on! I learned that the hard way trying to install one of these on a...
@HemiAlex Man, I’d go ahead and save yourself the heartache and garden hose that thing. Go a couple different directions - into the block and into the radiator. Let it come out the radiator drain, then block drain, then probably both. Then start some cycles of running it with distilled water for...

Look for patterns:
High speed vs low speed
high rpms vs low rpms
Watch the temp
After cold start vs after hot starts
Weather
Full tank of gas vs empty
Etc etc
These things all relate to various engine systems. Also test your fuel cut solenoid. What does the exhaust smell like when it dies?
Intermittent stuff is hard to pin down. EGR is definitely still suspect since we don't know how it was tested. Could be little crud in the float bowl. Could be a cracked block. Could be a bad coil or an intermittent electrical connection related to spark. Intermittent vacuum leak. Not to be...
@batthewmrown and I were rebuilding our transfer cases at about the same time. He rented something like this or this from O'reilly, and I borrowed it from him. Yanked that bearing out in about four seconds. Once you get down to the pilot bearing on the crankshaft of the motor, I used a big ass...
