200 mile range is just enough to drive the Alcan but don't skip too many gas stations and carry 10ga or so of extra fuel.
I drove my 80 on 36's w/ 4.88's up the Alcan in the month of Nov. years ago towing a 26ft enclosed snowmobile trailer and averaged 8MPG from Nebraska. I had to stop for fuel...
Ode to a Cruiser
A five year lease in New York when she was fresh and clean.
A shop owner did a mild build and made her on off-road queen.
A millionaire collector took her home to show her off, but soon forgot about her, too busy playing golf?
So a caring couple bought her, built her more and...
She isn't sold yet so I haven't actually had to say goodbye. If we chatted, you would understand why it is unfortuneately so, probably better than many.
This year's event you can fly up to Alaska, buy this beauty and go 4wheelin' on the cruiser trek!
Then drive it home, ship it home, sell it, sell it back to me....whatever.
1996 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80
The omptimal setup for this type of event is heavy load carrying capacity and decent wheel travel to absorb big bumps at higher trail speeds without bottoming out. This could be acheived with either spring over or spring under.
Minimum vehicle requirements on past Trek"s has been 35" mud terrain tires, rear locker, winch, the ability to carry extra fuel (20+ GA). More recently, an air intake snorkel has been added to the list.
Good job on the PHH!
I've traveled the ALCAN with trailers and used a pop-up for two months in Canada and found....
The trailer suspension and tires are going to take more of a beating than the 80 because the trailer suspension/tires are puny compared to any tow vehicle. I'd keep the pop-up...
Pitbulls just tuck into the fenderwell and don't threaten to catch the fender flares like the 15.5" wide boggers do. They ride and wear great on the road but aren't aggresive enough for the bottomless tundra bogs and mud that we battle in Alaska.
The 40 and red pick up are both outstanding rigs owned by friends here in Anchorage but not sure on the fenders. We were doing a photoshoot to promote an off-road driving school for teenagers through Atheneum High School.
No radius arm flip. Full Slee suspension if that wasn't obvious b/c of the 6" lift coils.
She's a beast on the road with ALL the bad manners of a lifted truck. With my Pitbull Mad Dog radial "road" tires, I can do 80 on the highway and drive daily. With Boggers bolted on, she just howls, "take...
