    Front dust shields (needed?)

    Hi, I'm rebuilding the front disc brakes on my 76 FJ40 and the backing plates are totally rusted out. Are required? I spoke to a vendor and they told me that they have to be used. Cost is $399 for a pair and if they are not needed, I don't want to incur the expense.

    Brake booster?

    I have a 76 FJ40 where I’m looking to swap the rear drums with disc. Do I need to upgrade the brake booster and cylinder or can I use the original? Has front disc already as they came standard.

    Mystery - what year cowl?

    Hi - the FJ40 I'm restoring is a 1976. I just noticed now (after over 100 hours working on the 40, the cowl does not have the vent in the center of the top of the cowl. Did all 1976 FJ40s have a vent in the cowl? This cowl looks to be of the later 1979+ era. Any thoughts? Thanks.
