Yea I realize that is high (actually 15* advance I misspoke.) But it was running fine so i didn't adjust..."if it ain't broke." Anyway, I've got a previous post that discusses this with some additional comments from other members if you are interested. I will look for vac leak using carb...
Ok sorry for the delay...had to dig out vacuum gauge and find the time. At any rate, hooked it up to "gas filter" vacuum supply and reading 15 and steady. Idle seemed okay but didn't have tach on to see RPMs. Responded normally to throttle blip. Only thing I noticed was my vacuum gauge...
Recently been getting intermittent low and sometimes rough idle of my 81 40...barely stays running at times...runs fine with just a little choke. Otherwise runs great...egr disconnected and FCS direct wired. I've had some previous issues with carb I've been able to correct with carb cleaner...
Thanks...yep alternator is OEM built like a tank....like I said hasn't been changed since new (81.) The new one I have in box is from Autozone...not so sure on that one, but it has lifetime warranty. Not a good idea for me...I'm on my third NAPA starter with lifetime warranty. When this one...
OK...put old alternator back in, checked grounds (good), fired it up and charging to 14.2. I'm thinking just process of banging alternator around a little woke it up. Maybe some carbon on brushes, etc. At any rate working fine now. Can't believe 10 year old battery is still kicking but held...
Thanks for all the replies...digging into all of them. I checked engine fuse (10A)...good. That's the only fuse I know about. It has blown before and you get zero power. You guys think it might be possible that during the process of removing alternator (little tapping with hammer, etc.) I...
OK battery went dead couple days ago. on my 81 FJ40. Thought it was battery, but after putting in on charger it tested good...held 12.6 volts. So decided to test alternator using battery cables with a multi-meter. No change in battery voltage after starting. So got to be alternator right? So...
Just an update. Fan started working fine again. I guess in the process of troubleshooting I must have bumped something that was loose. Checked the wire from manifold temp sensor...it looked OK but I did move it around some. Checked the inline 15A fuse...didn't even take it out, but I did...
Thanks...I'll let you know. Worse comes to worse I'll just ground it and let it run everytime. But I enjoy learning more and doing stuff myself if I can. I truly appreciate the insights of experts such as yourself.
Hey thanks. Yep I grounded temp sensor wire after cycling key on and off...fan came on. Does that mean the controller is working and issue is with the sensor? Was thinking the same thing about the fuse. The only reason I didn't change it out is it is not actually easy to get to with two...
Ok more confused than ever. Fan runs normally jumped to ground. I've read all the threads on carb fan, but still have questions. First of all I have 1981 40. I checked inline fuse and seems intact. It actually has a 15A fuse which corresponds to wiring diagram...guess it's different than 5A...
FCS has been working fine for several years with direct ground...so I guess it could be computer solder? From what I understand it cracks at connector. Checked engine fuse but still need to check 5A inline fuse for carb fan. Thanks again I'll let you know.
Wow super informational thread. I have an 81 FJ40 that the carb fan just quit working, Idle solenoid quit some time ago...now wired with direct ground. I'm getting ready to reflow solder on my computer to hopefully fix those issues. As an expert, any advice? Things to look for, potential...
Meant to ask all the experts on here...any problem running with EGR bypassed long term? Doesn't seem to pinging under load, although I may need to adjust idle speed a little...seems little to high. Thanks.
Just to follow up...problem kept happening intermittently. I decided to try "golf tee fix" for EGR valve. Plugged vacuum line from modulator to EGR with golf tee...running perfect since then..couple of months at least.
