While every engine is different I figured let’s start a database of oil samples. Might be helpful for comparing the health of our diesels.
I’ve recently changed the type of filter I’m using and seeing what condition the oil is in if I push it out to yearly changes. I was mainly concerned with...
So I’ve been looking at my collection of 80 series parts over the weekend and it got me thinking about the best way too maintain them long term. I already spray preservative on anything bare steel, but what about gaskets, seals and other assorted items?
@OGBeno are there any recommendations...
Since there’s no Hilux section and the two vehicles share many similarities I figured I’d post my little build in here.
I have a 2016 that started life as a cab chassis, it was built with an Ironman bullbar, 2” lift and bash guards. The tray has been excellent, but now that I no longer use it...
In an effort to help solve my Hiluxs dusting issues I have been looking for a suitable dust separator.
I have just purchased an aftermarket air box to get rid of the factory panel filter, it has a 4” inlet. Donaldson makes an in-line separator that would fit inside the guard and plumb up but I...
Has anyone seen this before and know the cause or am I looking at a dodgy tire? This is a daily driver, gets aired down and driven on the beach almost every weekend otherwise sits at road pressures. Only 1 tire has done this.

Just posting up what looks like a relatively new product to the market. It looks better designed than the provent with a better quality filter element.
What do you think @Dougal? Looks like they’ve built a better version of the provent.
So there is plenty of tech on tire width, not so much on wheels. So all other variables removed, how does changing width (narrower or wider) effect things?
My question stems from wanting to go to a lower offset wheel with the same size tire, however all aftermarket wheels are wider than stock.
I’m throwing this question in here since there isn’t a section for 15’+ hilux’s on here and you guys have a good collective knowledge of leaf springs!
I want to drop the ride height in the back end of my hilux an inch or so, which leaf/s would be best to remove to achieve that? I’m thinking the...

Just found this block and tackle and thought I would share. Looks to be a neat little unit that would be handy for lifting gear into the back of my ute amongst other things, would also be good for lifting spare tires for those of you running big rubber.
Can any of you fine folk who are poking around on their 40/55 this weekend take a measurement for me please?
I'd like to know the distance from the wheel mounting surface on a drum brake cruiser to the centre of the top king pin bearing.
Thanks very much!
This is our compilation of built up and modified diesel rigs as well as those who have done diesel swaps. I will add to it as I find content, post a link if you want your build added to the list.

I've been discussing this over in the 40/55 tech area and it was suggested you guys might be a better sounding board for my ideas.
I have a bone stock 55 and an 80 that will become a parts cruiser. My plan is to cut off the 55 knuckle balls and run the 80 series units that will give me a larger...
So this thread is going a completely different direction from when it began, I will slowly be kitting out my Hilux for seeing as much of this country as I can. I’d work faster but my piggy demands too much of my attention:rolleyes::hillbilly:.
At the moment it is easily self sufficient for an...
This looks promising as another alternative fuel source. Hopefully it develops further and becomes more widely available.

My factory part time transfer went out with a bang the other day, grinds in hi/low 2/4wd with zero drive but no noise in neutral, started tearing it down tonight but no signs of damage so far and no big junks of metal. The oil is a muddy red colour so it must have copped some water at some...
So I scored a vac pump in a box of parts I bought a week back. Never played with one before today. Noticed that the outlet for the pump feeds into the crankcase. This would mean that a leak in a vacuum line or brake booster could cause your motor to appear to have blow by.
This popped up on my Facebook news feed this morning. It's for a Nissan patrol but I wonder if the concept could be adapted to our 80s. Would be an awesome upgrade. Thinking I'll send them an email regarding a version for our rigs.
Thoughts?
