I've got to roll the motor over and take off the pan, then look for the numbers on a crank lobe I'm told. Then, I can tell if it's a steel crank. I'll put that on my to do list.
I forgot to put a price on the SM420. I'm asking $50. I also have the '59 327 SBC and I'm told it may have a steel crank. I'm going to scrape the crud off of it and find the serial numbers and research that.
I'm parting out an old truck and it has an SM420 4 spd. Hammerhead suggested I post it for sale because somebody is making parts for them again and it doesn't matter so much that it's 50yrs old.
The tranny is located in Veyo, which is located on Hwy 18, approx. 20mi N. of St. George, Utah.

I have an '86 Toyota (p/u) parts truck for sale. It has a Marlin Crawler double t-case set up, and a lock-rite loaded rear-end with 4.10 gears. The front center section is gone. The 22R engine needs rebuilding...
I also have a Blue camper shell for the '85 that is in really good condition. It had a carpet kit in it which the carpet is shot , but, the plywood is good and can be re-carpeted. $50 for the camper shell & etc. The '85 has a sweet little flatbed now. I'll let it go for $800

It's not a really a Saginaw problem. There are several different turn ratios. The one I have is a tight one, like the one you mention. 1 & 7/8 turns lock to lock. It's hard to get used to, but, I like it fine with my original steering wheel. I didn't like the smaller diameter wheel from a P/U...
Flat towing
FJ40's only tow as bad as they drive down the highway. Mine flat tows as nice as most trailers. 2yrs ago I flat towed hammerhead's FJ40 to Moab with my '78 and had no problems either. A panic stop could have been bad though.
The big thing with flat towing with the rear...

Isn't the H41 tranny the 3.55:1 ratio that I have in my '78?
I've been told that I need the H42 if I want a lower 1st gear. It is supposed to have something like 4.9:1. Or I need to pick up a 5spd
Hammerhead built a couple of tire carriers lateley and he used latches from De-Sta-Co. We get them from an outfit in Ogden, Utah. I found this source on the internet: www.bandsawblade.com
Click:

2. Manual Clamps
3. Latch Action Clamps

Even with Saginaw PS I had to have my steering stops limit my right turn radius. It was rather embarassing to have to back up and turn again on trail trides like the Heep Safari. When I did the SR, that cured my scrub prob. I also switched to 3.5in back spacing.
