When it doesn't start does your check engine light illuminate with the key on? If not it's probably the old fuse box issue.
I would not just start shotgunning parts.
Wheel spacers have zero impact on reliability, unless installed incorrectly and your wheel falls off. Congrats on the new truck, jealous of the five speed.

There's a pinch weld or seam on the body behind the rear tires (looking at them straight on) that runs above the frame rail, you can bend it up with a pry bar and then hammer it back when you're done.
It's a great access point to reach the upper shock hardware.
