Before you disconnect the hoses you could clamp each of them off with large pair of vice grips. This would minimize the amount of leakage while you connect them together with the pipe thing.
Anything can be done with a cutting torch and a welder. Would you have to match the tittle to the body or the frame? With no title to the 40 you might be in trouble??

The last year for the 3 speed was 1973. Mine is a Jan 73 and has the 3 speed. I am not sure about the later ones like the Nov and Dec, some might have the 4-speed?
You should probably unhook your battery cable. When you start moving the cluster around it is easy to short out some of the connections...... This would not be a good thing!
I had the same problem several months ago. I fixed mine with JB Weld. Probably not a permanent fix but it has lasted for about 4 months. If you try the JB weld method you will need to clean the crack with a wire brush and I then flushed the crack with some alcohol, let it dry and gooped it...
