Builds BJ42 found in derelict barn

Having removed the offending metal and reassembled all the bits, not surprisingly she started up and ran fine. I now thought it was time to install a Wilson switch to get rid of my unreliable pre heat timer unit. I chose to try and simulate the orignal relay sequence using the same type of glow...

Diesel flow problems on a 1995 KZJ78 prado

Thanks guys, Fuel lines empty this morning. Presuming the large black button on top of the fuel filter housing is the primer, continual pressing produced nothing. I filled the filter and pipe lines by hand and managed to start the beast having flattened 3 batteries. She then ran fine. Pressing...

Diesel flow problems on a 1995 KZJ78 prado

Can anyone assist. I have a 1995 KZJ78 which I run on bio fuel during the summer months. As soon as the temperature drops to about +3 degrees she doesn't want to start. The problem is bio fuel gels above freezing so I have to employ the help of a hair drier. It always works! This winter I lost...

Builds BJ42 found in derelict barn

Yes, Matti .You're only as young as you feel and I still feel fine. The challenge of restoring the bj42 was regarded with derision by my family but I could never refuse a challenge.

Builds BJ42 found in derelict barn

With the sad demise of my do everything desktop computer, a decision was required whether to buy another, or spend more on the bj42. Absolutely no problem ........ Hence no reports or pictures for months. With withdrawel systems too much to bear , I have to continue with my limited iPad. From...

    3b diesel priming problem

Has anyone any tips on how to prime and bleed air from the diesel fuel supply on my 3b bj42? After a necessary head off job I am having great difficulty in bleeding all the air from the fuel system. I have rigged up a small tank and fed the fuel directly into the fuel pump and successfully bled...

    Wanted 24v timer pre heater

As the numbers are different I don't think I could risk it. We would only know by opening it up and comparing but let's not do that. Thanks a million for your input.

    Wanted  24v timer pre heater

I am in the process of converting my 24v bj42 1982 glow plug system into a Wilson switch version. I do however prefer the old automatic timer-preheater. Has anyone an old 24v 28521-57010 that I could use to cannibalise and repair my mechanically compromised version over the long winter months?

    Bestop owners - dimension questions

I recently fitted a new bestop but I am not sure what measurements you need. I thought I was going to have trouble as my dimension from windscreen top to rear small doors was 2 inches too long. However, I drilled new holes in the rear upright frame and all is well. Could you indicate from my...

dual relay super glow Wilson switch conversion

Decision made. I plan to energise the 2 relays using a double pole double throw ( DPDT ) momentary switch ( centre zero ) feeding 24v to relay 1 for 5 secs. then switching 24 v to relay 2 for 15 secs. approx.Using the original relays and wiring, this should feed 24v to the glow plugs for 5 secs...

dual relay super glow Wilson switch conversion

Having wrecked the glow plugs leading to an expensive head off job, I have finally decided the heater/timer unit in my 24v. 1982, bj42 has got to go. It was damaged in its rolling down the Pyrenees but is now proving to be too unreliable. My question to all you experts is, can I simply utilise...

3b cylinder head torque wrench settings

Hi Spangly, On removing the glow plugs , one had about a cm. missing. I tried to reinsert a full length plug but felt resistance. Not deterred, I pressed harder and the plug slid in that bit further. That's when I knew it had to be a head off job. I had not done this for about more than 60 years...

3b cylinder head torque wrench settings

That would be fantastic, John. Also the torque settings for the valve rocker arms and the inlet and exhaust manifolds should be sufficient for me to begin reassembling the cylinder head after my decoke without fear of doing serious damage.

3b cylinder head torque wrench settings

Hi John, That appears to be the correct manual. Do you have the manuals title? I would like to try and find a copy on this forum . There are other settings I need to know to finish the job properly. The correct wiring diagrams would also be invaluable. Thanks a million.

3b cylinder head torque wrench settings

Hi Vikor, I have the manual you refer to ,courtesy of this forum, but it doesn't say anything about which years. I also have another which quotes from 1988 and head settings are 500 cms/Kg. My model is a 1982 so I guess the 1200 cms/Kg is probably the one. It could however be a major disaster if...

3b cylinder head torque wrench settings

Having been forced into removing the cylinder head on my August 1982 bj42 3b engine ( ser. No 0518803 ), due to glow plug disintegration problems, I am struggling to find the correct torque settings to put it all back together correctly. I have read two workshop manuals on this fantastic forum...

    3B diesel glow plug problems

Sorry! I called the sedimentor/alternator light my ignition light .( normally I'm a petrol head ). It now correctly goes out on START up since I had the alternator fixed. The glow plug light not coming on was the start of my disasterous fault finding exercise eventually leading to a broken glow...

    3B diesel glow plug problems

Having not being used for about 5-6 years she remarkably started up almost immediately. The only visible problem was the ignition light remained on all the time. This led me to the alternator which I eventually discovered only required an internal clean up. In the process of investigating the...

    3B diesel glow plug problems

I removed the air filter and poured an eggcup of diesel direct into the air inlet. How it started with dud glow plugs I'll never know. My main concern now is that bit of missing glow plug. My removed g. plugs are NGK 9892 (not in Lostmarbles amazing research list). What are you using?
