Thanks for sharing the photos and details, I have not found anyone who would respray my 80 for that <$5,000 figure, stopped at Maaco in Bellevue a while back and just got blown off because they had so much insurance work. I'll likely head up there to talk to the shop in Woodinville.
We've set up our 80 to flat tow behind this guy, it's on a 4WD diesel F550 chassis.
It's a great long trip hauler for our family of 6. I've flat towed my GX470 behind a gas 1/2 ton pickup, that's not something I'd do for very long.
Diode lights are pretty easy, you’ll need to basically run a flat 4 wire trailer harness to the rear of your vehicle, then splice in the diodes. 2 beer job etrailer has good video tutorials. The hardest part for me was deciding to drill the Hole for the 6 pin trailer connector in my Dissent...
Looks like your GX either got some fresh recall paint or someone took really good care of it.
We’re headed nowhere in particular, we’ll head down to Utah 1-2 times a year and lots of weekend camping trips around the PNW.
Thank you! Yep, it’s built on an F550 diesel 4x4 platform. Plenty of power, and moving from a gas motorhome I’m really impressed with how exhaust braking and tow/haul mode on the transmission helps control speed on descents.
Great thread, thanks to all who have shared their setups.
I’m super excited to get my 80 going behind my motorhome here in the next few months. Previously we flat towed our GX470 behind our camper, but I always wanted an 80 and finally got into one that will be the family adventure mobile...
I’ve had my Blue Ox Patriot Brake for ~6 years and it’s worked great for us.
One tip you didn’t ask for but I’d offer - be sure you have room in your GCVW limits for the 100. It’s got an 8k rated hitch but you might not have 8k in actual capacity in real world weight.
Congrats on the new Class A!
Wanted to say thank you for this write up and solution. Car audio shop wanted to charge $300 to bypass the amp, $5 for the harness, an hour of time and a bunch of connectors and I'm in business. Why did I live with the alternator whine for so long?
Hey David - congrats on the new rig and welcome. I'm an 05 GX owner over in Snoqualmie. In the Seattle region the 3 shops I hear about the most are Torfab in Everett, Auburn Car Repair & Offroad & Mule in Issaquah.
Also you might consider joining GXOR-WA on Facebook, good local info there.
Can anyone share the measurements for the bumper trim required for the Coastal rear? I’m all welded up, currently getting coated, but going to pick it up and install the night before I leave for a long trip. Thinking I can speed things up by trimming now. Any pics or measurements you have would...
Not sure what snow conditions on northern facing slopes will look like then, but I’d recommend adding this to your short list:
- shovel
- snatch strap w/ shackles
- some kind of saw for cutting blow downs. You won’t likely need a full-on chainsaw but a handsaw might come in handy.
A buddy and I...
For trails, Tahuya is a ton of fun even if you are stock, and as the snow clears sections of the BDR are a blast, a lot of the sections are long forest service roads but there are some fantastic sections and great camping spots.
Checking in from Snoqualmie - absolutely love my GX. Seats 6 comfortably on adventures & tows great behind my camper. Currently working on Coastal rear bumper with swing out and a sleeping platform from Mountain Pass OR. Hoping to get many more years of adventures out of this ride.
@nadroj - did you ever end up figuring this out? I’m about to move from OEM bumper to an aftermarket solution. I’ve currently got the Roadmaster base plate and can’t figure out how it would work with a new bumper.
Currently intending to get some real world feedback on this product mounted to a...
