What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Spent last week in and around Death Valley. Let my 12-yr old son have the wheel through Mengal Pass and other stretches...he did great. Much greenery to be seen in Striped Butte Valley. Sunsets did not disappoint. Roof rack is useful for many functions. May need to go back this fall...

Opinions on quieting ARB Classic Rack

I think moving the rack back several inches is worth trying. My ARB is not particularly noisy in the position shown here. Looks better, too.

Has anyone hit a rock so hard the diff separated a little? (Warning!!! GRAPHIC AXLE DAMAGE INSIDE)

^ ^ ^ What Broski said. ^ ^ ^ Maybe a silly question, but before trying to pull the axle did you orient the flat spot on the Birfield bell to the top, 12 o'clock position? The flat spot is hard to see when the axle is installed, but easy to feel if you run your fingers around the Birfield bell...

Where did you mount your VHF/UHF radio?

I fit my HAM below a single-DIN stereo deck. Mic is mounted near the mirror on a magnetic mount. Real happy with the setup. Some pics here: What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/what-did-you-do-with-your-80-this-weekend.586191/post-13403659

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Tough to tell from the photo, but have you adjusted the pinion angle such that it points directly towards the double cardin joint (make the pinion joint angle zero)? Disregard if BOTH joints are now double cardin.

Nice! Lippincott & Echo Canyon...two of my favorites.

What’s everyone driving when you leave your LC home?

Ya, agree. I tried finding a manual IS300, but those I found for sale violated my self-imposed "cheap" criteria.

What’s everyone driving when you leave your LC home?

Great question! I pondered a cheap beater car for a while, but I hate front-wheel drive and wanted something interesting, fun, and reliable. Couldn't find much that qualified until found me a 2005 Lexus IS300. Rear-wheel drive, inline 6 (Supra-style), quiet, smooth, great power, go-cart...

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Racetrack, near the Grandstand pulloff! I still don't know why Death Valley holds such allure...but I do know I am jealous of your adventure and can't wait to get back there. Glad it fixed your "D".

CLOSED --- TOUGH DOG SUSPENSIONS and TOUR FLEX SPRINGS---CLOSED

Yessir, still running strong. No issues in either my 1997 80 Series or in my wife's 2011 4Runner.

Brake pedal soft and mushy after new pads installed...

You may have compounding issues here, but I don’t recall seeing any mention of a proper “bed-in” of the new pads, which could quite likely be part or all of your problem. There are plenty of bed-in procedures on the web from various pad manufacturers…pick your poison, they’re all similar. BUT...

What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

I'd argue that the Delta bracket leaves more usable engine compartment space, not less. It's tucked pretty much as far back as possible against the firewall, and is not at all in the way of wiring for dual battery setups, fridge wiring, or York OBA plumbing. Some pics:

Front E-Locker Diff Stuck on Removal

Mine also fought back on the way out. Made it happen by rotating the pinion flange with one hand while pulling/rocking/wiggling the 3rd with the other. The ring gear was catching on the housing...by rotating the pinion & ring gear, the gear got traction where it was kissing the housing and...

CLOSED --- TOUGH DOG SUSPENSIONS and TOUR FLEX SPRINGS---CLOSED

Ya, good plan. At one point early this year I had some horrible squeaking going on. Turned out the Johnny Joints on my lower control arms were just dry...they do have Zerk fittings, but the joints are so tight I don't think my grease gun was doing much good. Ended up disassembling them to clean...

CLOSED --- TOUGH DOG SUSPENSIONS and TOUR FLEX SPRINGS---CLOSED

More than 3 yrs on mine, many trail miles and my DD...no squeaks from shocks. What troubleshooting have you done to confirm shock vs. something else? Easy to remove shocks and see if noise stays or goes.

    Hot exhaust burning rear carpet

An overly hot exhaust is likely a symptom of an upstream problem. Assuming heat shields are good and the exhaust hasn't shifted closer to the body for some reason, I'd be taking a serious look at everything that could a rich air/fuel condition. The cats will faithfully burn excess combustibles...

    Parking break upgrade

Cruiser Brothers / Valley Hybrids sells the Terrain Tamer extended dogbone (strut) thingie. I bought a couple a few years back, and they did help. Not transformative, but helpful. With new shoes that have not yet conformed to the drum ID, performance will absolutely stink. Gotta "burn-in" the...

    deleting fj80 sunroof

Looks good, well done. That G10 seems to have folded down and conformed well at the front corners. Are you going to add a few more hold-down screws, or call it a day? Probably fine as-is...I tend to overdo it.
