For Sale  East Texas: 1977 FJ40 - OEM Gas Tank

I am selling the original tank from my 1977 FJ40. I had to replace it because rust in the tank was clogging the fuel filter. It will need to be cleaned and resealed, but it did not leak fuel. I'm asking $100 OBO. I am willing to ship it, but can't predict the cost.

    My First FJ40 - 1977

I got my rig back a little before Christmas and all the work has made a huge difference. It's running great. I had my mechanic save the original tank. It does have rust. Would anyone on the forum be interested in purchasing a used, rusted tank or should I toss it? Thanks for the help.

Fill hose. I went OEM on the tank. The $80 difference made that an easier decision than a $300 one.

They informed me that it was discontinued, to hurry up, and buy now while supplies last. Any recommendations for other options?

Thanks for this. I'm now following your refresh for inspiration. Did you replace the filler line, all fuel hoses, and sending unit? The OEM tank is on sale ($470), but I don't know if that includes a new sending unit like CCOT. Thanks again.

Thanks for the advice. I was searching "polyurethane" not "poly."

    My First FJ40 - 1977

After months of investigation and trying to keep it driving for as long as possible, a rusted fuel tank is the root problem. I found that SOR has stock metal tanks, but CruiserCorp has polyurethane tanks for 1/3 of the price. Does anybody have experience or strong opinions about tank material...

Thanks for the suggestions. I had the valves adjusted once I found the loose nut in the engine.

I've been trying to mess with the truck for the past few weeks with no luck. I am also struggling to find the idle solenoid on my carb. I have several threads on Holley carbs on FJ40s, but I couldn't find a model number on mine. I would like to try to learn how to fix this without taking it to...

I got the regulator in and sprayed used some carb cleaner. It is idling better with the full choke, but dies when I turn the choke off. I decided to post some videos in hopes that y'all can give me some guidance on next steps. Should I use more carb cleaner? Does it need adjusting? Does it sound...

I may need to delete this thread. The amount of dumb I display here is really disheartening. Thanks for the help.

This is a top and bottom view of where the old voltage regulator was attached. I meant to say to the body, not frame, but the problem is the same for bolting down the new voltage regulator. The head of the bolt twisted off. I also don't know what to do with the horn going off when the new...

    My First FJ40 - 1977

I tried this today, and there were some clicks that sounded like they were coming from the battery side of the 2f engine. I'm guessing this means it needs replacing. Is there a major difference between the $19 aftermarket compared to the $100 OEM? How serious of surgery is replacing it? Thanks...

    My First FJ40 - 1977

Got to spend some time working on the rig today. The last time I took it for a drive the first half was great. Went to breakfast, but afterwards it started sputtering out. I made it home with the choke on full, but it would slowly sputter out if I wasn't giving it gas. So I tried to address the...

Thanks @Jetlander for the recommendation. I was dumb enough to add some oil and Lucas stabilizer before I started working it. I took off the valve cover and found this little guy flopping around under the valve cover. I just put it back in place, tightened it down, and put the valve cover back...

Thank y'all so much. I will start with the valve cover. I saw that I will need to replace the gasket in the oil pan if I get to that, but should I go ahead and replace the gasket on the valve cover while I'm at it?

Thanks for the advice. I saw one thread that said the only way to properly mess with the oil pan is to have a professional do it or grow 3 extra arms. Do you have any experience with the difficulty level here 1-10?

I was trying to figure that out all day. I posted the video to see if it sounded like a "clank" to y'all and not a "pop". It sounds like it is on the carburetor side of the engine, but couldn't get a good sense of top or bottom.

So I changed out my plugs today. As you can see, they needed changing. It is still not burning clean. The new plugs came out grungy after just running for a less than 20 seconds. Unfortunately, my problem stuck around. It passed a compression test, but it still sounds like a clank. I didn't test...

Alright. I found a buddy that is more mechanical than I am. We did a compression test and all of the readings were between 120 and 130. I wouldn't call the engine warm when I did the test. I put in new spark plugs and tested the spark plug wires and they all passed. None of this fixed the issue...
