ANNNNND I'm back. I was able to steal a few hours in the shop today and this is where I am at. I got the timing belt all lined up and hand cranked it through a few rotations to make sure the timing was on. It was. Thank you to @2001LC, @outdoorsman and @REZARF for the help. When you know how to...
You probably did cover it, I apologize. Its been a rough few weeks and my head isn't on straight.
I meant idlers, not tensioners, I was typing faster than I was thinking.
I got some clamps so I must have read your suggestion somewhere. I will get out in the shop tonight and give all this a go...
Sorry for falling off the face of the earth. I had some life business to deal with. Now that I have delt with that, I will have much more time to work in the shop.
So, I got the water pump in today and associated bits, but now I am stuck on the timing belt. I put it on the crank pulley, then...
Good, thanks for checking in. I have it all apart and life got a little in the way. I am hoping to make some progress on it tomorrow afternoon, but the weather is finally looking halfway decent here so I may have to go on a motorcycle ride.
Nice rig!
I would replace the heater hose "t"'s
DIY: Replacing heater hose pipe T's *important*
And since I am knee deep in replacing a broken timing belt, I would recommend replacing the timing belt.
@cwmoser Yes. I do everything in my power to work on my own stuff all the time just because I know its done right. Plus there is no better way to learn than to do!
I would think if the impeller went first, it would have broken into more pieces and it would have been more catastrophic in there. The WP came off without too much effort, so I don't think I broke it getting it off.
All I know is I am going to baseline the crap out of this thing now that it is...
The water pump impeller was broken. I think it was collateral damage after the belt broke because the broken piece was still attached and there was no marking in the water pump cavity.
The belt has a few markings on it. “Made in USA” cam markings, 298...a few that match the belt I got in the kit, but not exactly the same. The tension is way different. Much longer and I assume not made of aluminum because it rusted. I haven’t take it apart yet but I am going to and I assume it...
@2001LC not yet. I gave everything a spin and didn’t feel or hear any grinding. I haven’t gotten much deeper than getting the belt out. The next step is the fan bracket removal so I will know more tomorrow.
I actually stopped today because I wanted to read your trick about the AC compressor.
I have a FSM on order but it won't be here until next week. I would really like to at least get elbow deep into this over the long weekend. Between the information on this site and the info that @2001LC has graciously provided, I am confident I can take my time and get going on it.
OK. I bought the kit (I tried Kurt first, but they were out. Sorry...I had to Amazon this one) FSM and a few other things.
I do have a question about the timing. Since I have attempted to crank this thing over a million times with the timing belt disengaged, how do I get the cams back in correct...
Well, I have to wait for the parts to get in, so it gave me something to do and an excuse to buy a bore scope.
Now I am going to start tearing it apart for the belt.
It was cheap. I bought it at Harbor Freight for $75 and it did what I needed it to do. I could see using it often as long as it keeps working. They have one that is $170 with a bigger screen, rechargeable batteries and it can take photos of what it is looking at. The potential of me having to...
Quick update. I bought an El Cheap remote camera borescope thing today. Much to my relief, so far I haven't found any signs of valves hitting the pistons. I didn't have enough room to get a socket on the crank bolt to turn it over, but so far good news. I did find Bosch Platinum plugs in it, so...
