I think the conventional wisdom on the board here is that every FJ62 will benefit from a flush, and from the addition of a plate-style transmission cooler. I don't have any particular recs on a transmission fluid; maybe someone else can chime in on that.
As title says. This is my daily driver. Baby on the way/need a vehicle with airbags. Take a turn being the cool guy. I'll be the soccer dad.

As far as wheels go, I am a big fan of the stock Toyota steel wheels and hubcaps. You can still get the wheels direct from Toyota (Part # 42601-60072). Pretty sure the hubcaps are still available too. You'll need two front hubcaps and two rear hubcaps (the fronts have holes for accessing the...
I am not an oil engineer although there are some on here. However, because Mobil recommends the 15w-50 specifically for flat-tappet cam engines, I do not believe additional ZDDP would likely be necessary.
Re: filters, I use a few different ones though I note the Toyota-made filters seem to be...
I was apprehensive, to say the least, about using synthetic in mine when I switched to Mobil 1 at 210k miles. I know my RMS has a drip. Probably a few others, too. But, I can't tell any difference in the rate or amount of drip since switching. There may be a difference, but it isn't enough for...
Last oil change, I switched to M1 TDT 5w40. This was my first interval with a full synthetic. Happy to report No new leaks, and the old ones were about the same.
Valvetrain was not as quiet as when I was running the VR1 20w50, so I moved up to M1 15w50 per HemiAlex’s rec. Engine immediately...
I began having the same problem earlier this year with mine. As it turns out, somebody had spliced a in-line fuse on the part of the fusible link that went from the battery to the alternator. That in-line fuse had failed, And the crimp had also failed. I suspect that the failed crimp on the...

According to the Mobil 1 product data sheet, both the 15W-50 and the 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck Oil have 1300 PPM of zinc.
Figured I would update this thread now that I’ve had time to trace down the issue and fix it.
Apparently, someone in this FJ62 ‘s past saw fit to cut the charging wire at the fusible link and run a crappy inline glass fuse holder. That person also didn’t do a solid crimp. The crimp connecting...
My 1988 FJ62 died on the side of the interstate last night, and I'm not sure where to go next in terms of fixes. Any help is appreciated. Here's the back story:
- 1988 FJ62, 209k miles, original alternator started showing signs of failing (the transmission temp light flashing at idle in...
RE: the door lock not unlocking from the key, my '88 FJ62 is experiencing the same thing on the Driver's door. From within the truck, the power lock button gives a nice, strong pop to the locks in both directions. However, using the key to unlock the driver's door has given me more and more...
I finally ordered some Autopal headlight enclosures with H4 and H1 bulbs, and attempted running the wiring harness.
I made the wire changes spec’d in the instructions to the pickup plug on the new harness, and plugged the pickup plug into the old passenger side headlight plug.
The only caveat...
