Yes, jig saw. Just cut more toward the top than the bottom so the speaker frame doesnt hit the bottom of the box. I also stuffed mine with cotton battening. Really deep bass from such a small box.
So I'm not sure why I didn't think of this sooner. Maybe it was the sale on Amazon Prime day that prompted me to think about where I could use another Amazon Dot. For $25 I had to buy another one, and decided to put it in the GX. Works great, tethered to my iPhone. I already had the Grom aux...
I have a 2005, see my post here for $310 massive upgrade to ML speakers. Added 3.5mm jack for iphone. Couldn't ask for better sound.
Best Mod for under $100
2005 ML/NAV, 150k miles, $10,500. Maintained by dealer, probably never saw dirt. Needed timing belt and brakes done, then proceeded with about $4,500 in upgrades. A hell of a lot of vehicle for $15k.
Had to wait for it to get dark. Not as evident in the pictures since the phone camera compensates for level, but the LEDs massively overpowers the headlights. Noticeable color temperature difference too. Need to change headlights now.

Well this worked out most excellent so I thought I would share. I'll post night picture later. Installed single LED bars in the bumper vent holes. Cutting out the plastic grill inside each opening was easy, just need a sharp knife. Had to grind the short brackets that come with the LED bars a...
Yes you can do that but why? Won't be better, just back to the way it was at best. At least in my case they are 11yr old speakers, a lot has changed in speaker quality in 11yrs. It does have a downside, now the bass is so powerful things are starting to rattle. :)
Most car speakers are 4ohm or lately even 2ohm. I measured the ones I removed they are 5.5-8ohm. Makes sense since ML is a home audio company historically.
So this mod is about $143 ($71.50/door) but well worth it. I had to replace my ML 6x9s so I figured I may as well do the other speakers too while I had the door panels off. All are 8ohm and require very little modification, in the case of the mid and tweeters I even used the stock brackets...
Been on the list since June 2016, called yesterday and I'm 35th in line. Dealer said they only get 3-4 per month done due to supply. Talk about dragging it out. I may try calling around to other dealers.
I was on my first camping trip after my lift, air bags removed. Sleeping in the GX I could hear the compressor kick on. Pulled relay and fuse so that won't happen again.
