California Title and Registration of Diesels

No, they gave us the plates and stickers first and then Sacramento stopped it. I then got a South Dakota title. I swear if we would have gotten the SD title first, it wouldn't have been an issue. :-( I have hope that after a couple years our attempt will fall off the record and we can try again.

Yes you call them and they explain what they need. The forms are online. My husband was the one that physically did it, but she had to do a stencil rubbing of the vin number and send that in the mail the paperwork and check and they send title, registration, and plates. It’s registered at a San...

California Title and Registration of Diesels

I was given plates and gave them my money, and then shortly after that I got a letter from Sacramento that I needed to get CARB to test it. We thought we made it through, but it didn’t work. It’s been over 2 years now, it’s been easily and cheaply registered in South Dakota since then. I...

SOLD Euro Import 1988 LJ70 2.4L Turbo Diesel in CA (open to offers) NEW VIDEOS

It was done by the previous owner that owned a mechanic shop where we bought it in Spain. Sorry, that isn't very helpful.

SOLD Euro Import 1988 LJ70 2.4L Turbo Diesel in CA (open to offers) NEW VIDEOS

Doubtful, since it was built in 1988 for European standards. But since it’s a diesel, CA doesn’t require smog for diesels before 1997. They won’t have the VIN in the computer though, so they might ask questions if they look too deeply. It has a US title out of South Dakota. South Dakota lets you...

California Title and Registration of Diesels

Has anyone registered in South Dakota? I know they don't require you to establish residency or prove you have the car there. You are even allowed to register with your CA address and license. No emissions testing either. But I can't find out anything really about out-of-country cars...

California Title and Registration of Diesels

Update on my '88 LJ70 diesel imported from Spain. We are military and stationed in San Diego after coming back from 3 years in Spain and bringing our toy with us, it arrived a few months ago. We did the Vin verification at CHP, no problem. We went to the DMV a few times, no problem. They sent...

Starter: rebuild/replace and where to get in SoCal?

Is this for the European version? Also the application list ends at 87 and mine is an 88 :-/ Or does that matter?

Starter: rebuild/replace and where to get in SoCal?

We just received our '88 LJ70 2.4TD from the shippers not too long ago and unfortunately we need a starter. I asked the Spanish mechanic to fix it just before we left, but apparently that was lost in translation and he only cleaned it, not replaced the parts. Anyway, can't cry over spilled milk...

This is the response I got from ARB about my 1988 LJ70 that is currently on a ship heading to CA. Oh boy. "You are able to find California’s greymarket information on ARB’s websiteRegistering an NON-USA, out-of-country, or "Grey Market" car in California. The vehicle in question would be...

California Title and Registration of Diesels

My 1988 (or 87) LJ70 is on it's way to CA at the moment. I'll update you with what happens when it gets there late March. I am assuming I'll drive it with European plates for a bit and then register in CO first per military exemptions. Then register in CA at a later date. Good luck to everyone!

California Title and Registration of Diesels

Tell me I'm interpreting this correctly: that I can import and drive my truck with Euro plates without doing any real importing because we are Military stationed in Spain and own the vehicle and have registered it on base in our name. 12.080 Military Personnel (CVC §6701) Military personnel...

California Title and Registration of Diesels

I have not read every response in this thread, but there are been some good concerns and advice brought up that I thought I should ask for my own specific example. I am currently trying to import my 1988 LJ70 2LT from Europe to the US. I have owned it for 3 years. We are military, home of...

How much would you pay? 1988 LJ70 2LT

Yes i did! It was great :-) body is rust free as far as I can see. I think I will bring her home and keep her for a bit. The people that want to buy it want to go on long interstate road trips to get to fire trails and such for cycling and hiking. But I don't feel comfortable selling it to...

Yes, she turns a lot of heads on base! I have owned it for almost 3 years. I have an appointment for legal next week already, so I can bring it up then. Good idea.
