The 76 owners manual specifies 90 octane fuel which is about the same a 89 mid grade. Check with your local Shell station mine carries 89 non ethanol for about a quarter a gallon more than ethanol unleaded regular. When I changed over to the mid grade my mileage and performance improved noticeably.
Pretty much finished the drive train and suspension on my 76 fj40. Rebuilt the steering knuckles and replaced the wheel bearing this weekend. Now the real fun begins replacing the front fenders, rear sill and quarter panels I picked up from CCOT last week and prep for painting.
vcruiser the first thing I would do is find out were the knock is coming from. I purchased a well used and abused 76 that had a deep knock. Turned out to be a sticking lifter. Running it with a quart of transmission fluid in the crank case for a hundred miles and an oil change and the knock is...
Why are you wanting to install new shackles?
Back sagging?
Wanting to go bigger tires?
JohnnyC the current aftermarket shackles are toast. In addition they are 5 1/2 inch shackles installed by the PO who was running 16 inch narrow tires and are way too long.
Thanks to all. Stock it will be.
I have just about finished refurbishing the drive train and suspension on my 76 40 and am ready to install new shackles. Currently using 31 inch tires with stock springs. Driving profile will be about 80% highway, 15% improved gravel/dirt and 5% off road. What are your recommendation for shackle...
I'm getting ready to install new quarter panels and fenders on my 76 40 and would like some opinions on sources. Which source would you recommend for ease of installation and quality?
So far so good Sarge truck runs strong as it is currently set up. I'm pretty sure this is an older regulator. It is identical to the one I put on my 74 mini truck when I changed out the electric fuel pump and it was producing too much pressure for the stock Mazda carb back in the early 80s. I...
Price listings are in Euros. At todays exchange rate 3400 Euros is about $4095. I would bet shipping would be a whole bunch unless there were enough orders to fill a shipping container.
My 76 came to me with a Webber carb and an adjustable flow regulator in the fuel line. I thought it was because it was operated at high altitudes ( vehicle came from Colorado and was used in the High Country) now I know why it has the regulator. You learn some good stuff hanging around here.
My 1976 owners manual says Curb weight for vehicle with hard top (vehicle without load or passengers) is 3870.
Gross vehicle weight (vehicle with maximum load) is 4862. So both figure are correct.
Great recommendations. I pulled the left hand jump seat and I have built an insert that slides in the back with two full length draws for my shotguns, bird hunting gear, tools, jack and miscellaneous. The top of the insert fits over the wheels well so I have a flat surface for the dog box, ice...
OK this is in the running for stupid question of the week. I have what I suspect are several burnt out instrument cluster lights and have found a source for new bulbs but how do I get the old bulb out of the holder. I have tried to pull them out but don't want to use too much force and screw...
My 1976 owners manual specifies 90 octane but that is for leaded gas. Most unleaded ethanol here in middle America is 89 octane while regular unleaded is 87. That being said I get about 5% better fuel economy with regular unleaded fuel in my FJ 80 so I am going to move up to premium 91 octane in...
I had the same problem with my 76. I traced the problem to a break in the fuel line where it attaches to the tank. Nipped off two inches of hose and reinstalled the hose and now all is right with the world.
