I had a mechanic friend of mine take a look at it and he says the main bearing is shot. I know I can pick up a used one (tranny) and have it in in a day or two, but part of me would like to take a shot at rebuilding it myself to get the experence, then if I screw it up I'll go the used route. On...
Come on guys, with a little planning and some common sense 20 to 30 hours easy. I just finished my 40 up about two weeks ago and spent 20 hours wiring and 2 hours double checking and trouble shooting. That included shrink wraping everything and running additional circuts for extra goodies. I...
Ok it looks like I need a rebuild on a 74 FJ40 4 speed transmission. What I am wondering is how diffcult is the process? Is this something aperson with average machancial skills could undertake. If I do is there anything I should watch out for?
As always thanks for the help.
Dave
I need to remove the storage box from beneath the driver's seat. The box is in great shape so I would like to take it out with a minimum amount of damage. Does anyone have any tips on doing this. My rig is a 65 FJ40.
Thanks Dave
Just thought I drop a quick note as to what I did. I was able to, modify, (cut bend and cuss), my 65 hump to fit over the 4 speed and transfer. I cut one long rectangular hole from the Tranny shifter to the transfer shifter. Now I am in the process of making a custom steel insert to fill the...
I'm having the same problem any info is helpful. Does anyone know if you can calibrate a fuel gauge. I replaced my sender and checked it outside the tank but it oly reads 2/3rds full.
I want to replace the stock wheel on a 65 FJ40 with a smaller Grant steering wheel. The problem is they don't list an adaptor for anything older then a 73. Does anyone know if the 73 is the same as the 65? Otherwise Grant needs the OD, ID and spline count on the column to match with other...
I was hoping for something that had not been modified yet. I am going to keep looking, but if I can't find something in a week or two I contact you.
Thanks Dave
A few things to keep in mind; Check all lights and switches before starting project, that way when testing the completed wiring job you take that variable out of the equation. My ignition switch was bad, replaced it and all worked great.
I used a EZ 21 wiring harness, much cheaper then...
Just wanted to post a thanks for all the advice you all gave me about rewiring my 65 Cruiser. I used an EZ 21 wiring harness for GM. Took lots of notes and was able to do the job over the weekend. Worked perfect the first time. I wish all my projects turned out this well.
Thanks again, Dave
Just finished a conversion and have a few extra parts for sale:
Vacuum shifter looks to be complete but no guarantees it was modified originally to work with a Chevy 350. $35.00.
Steering Stablizer almost new. 10.00.
Wiring harness very questionable. Lots of splices but has majority of...
I just converted a 65 FJ40 to a 4 speed with floor shift. I need a Tranny hump years 73-78 to modify for my project. Located in No CA but am will to pay for the ride if the price is right.
Thanks Dave
From what I understand the 4 speed sits higher and a littler closer to the passenger side then the original 3 speed tranny cover. I plan on trying to modify what I have first and if that dosen't work try out some other fixes. If anyone has done this modification already and has some pictures...
OK, I've installed a 4spd tranny and transfer case in my 65 cruiser. Now I need to modify the Hump for the new floor shifter. Does anyone have pictures or advice about this undertaking. I read on some post where a later model hump cover could be adapted, but couldn't find it again. Oh I don't...
