Hi thanks for the info, I think my original post was a bit misleading, I have no issues with getting it to work and when set up it works well, unfortunately the drum design holds the mud in so if I want to keep it working I have to take the wheels and discs off to clean them out every time I go...
Thanks Juan,
The work to repair the factory park brake is no problem from me, I would just like to find a more reliable solution that requires less maintenance.
Thanks Ash
The parking brake / hand brake on my LJ78 has always been rubbish, it will work great for a short time, but will then stop working even after replacing all the shoes and disc/drum.
So I have been looking at alternatives, and the two I can find are:
1. Fit a transmission brake - I don’t really...
I feel your pain, I was in a similar situation last year when my wife over heated my engine (my fault the radiator was filled with mud) I thought about a 1uz swap but fuel is expensive in the UK, so I wanted to keep it diesel, although I do have a 1uz engine and gearbox mounted to a LJ78...
Well I run 35s with only a 50mm lift (I like the height of the tyres but without it being too tall) so it rubs every where 🙈 fronts are standard and rears are +50mm (I think) the standard LR shocks have a slightly longer collapsed length.
I can’t remember the lengths off the top of my head it...
As mentioned above Landrover defender / discovery 1 rear shock absorbers fit front and rear so that should open up quite a few options.
I have them fitted front and rear to my LJ78 because they are readily available here (UK)
I have been looking at upgrading my brakes on my LJ78, and found the tundra thread which includes part numbers.
I haven’t checked yet if they would fit.

So I have had a bit of time off from this, 3 kids, work, moved house all the usual excuses!
So I read through all of the pump
Manuals, tried different resistors and made some adjustments to the spill valve but all in all I just wouldn’t run right 👎
So I have gone with a 4m40 manual injection...
I run 35/10.5r16 tyres on my LJ70 and my LJ78 (both with 4.88 diffs) and I don’t go easy on either of them and have not had any issues, before any long trips I always check brakes and wheel bearings just incase
Hi does anyone know if the bell housings are interchangeable between A34x and A44x transmissions?
Looking to maybe swap a non electronic A440 or A442 into my LJ78.
Unfortunately I can’t actually give you any answers, except it looks like I will be giving a similar think a try (I have 1kz swapped my LJ78 automatic but having EDC issues so I’m contemplating a 4m40 pump swap.
Thanks I did wonder about the spill valve, most people
Only adjust it for top end fueling so wasn’t sure if it would make much difference, but nothing to loose by giving it a try!
So the physical engine swap is now complete, the 1kzte more or less bolted in with no issues I used the hilux surf bell housing and torque converter mounted to the LJ78 A343f gearbox but had to mod the 2LTe engine mounts.
As expected the part that hasn’t been so easy is the EDC side of things...
