I put the icing on the cake this week as far as the conversion is concerned. Replaced the “4500 EFI” stickers with the OEM “turbo” stickers for the FTE. Totally digging the colour.
Also my replacement OEM driveshaft arrived from Saudi, courtesy of my parents. This is the OEM manual trans...
Thank you!
Correct, the FZJ frame mounts did indeed line up with the FTE. The frame is identical between the engine variants. However a V8 frame is totally different from the FZJ/FTE frame, even the torsion bars are different.
Guys, there’s no need to buy new boots or solder new contacts. The problem lies in the conductive carbon paint that is inside the boot that presses against the contacts upon pressing the button.
I just bought some circuit board conductive paint like this:
I repainted the black contact...
I've only driven a full time V8 a hand full of times. But a part time cruiser can be a pain in the ass in slippery/snowy conditions. The back end spins out and goes all over the place. As for diesel vs V8, they're quite a bit different. The V8 and 1FZ have pretty constant power/torque through...
It’s done and on the road!
This whole process has taken me almost 3 years of research, finding parts, planning and probably 500+ hours of my own labor.
It drives perfect, it’s smooth, relatively quiet and is better than i expected. I had a fear that doing this big of a conversion, ultimately...
I forgot to post my progress pictures of my interior and wiring adventure.
As mentioned before, I decided to do the conversion wiring completely custom myself. The reasoning was that the GCC options on this truck are so specific, it would be near impossible to find a diesel donor harness that...
Wiring was a HUGE undertaking. Probably spent close to 50 hours on wiring alone. Granted, I spliced everything into my 1FZ harnesses from donor HDJ101 harnesses which made it much more difficult. I thought about getting complete FTE harnesses from Europe, but they would be missing a lot of the...
So first big issue is the 25 year import rule, it’ll be flat out impossible to import permanently unless you only want it in the US for 1 year. The laws are robust and there are no work arounds for permanent importation sub 25 years, especially for a vehicle like this.
Heater core is a MUST...
She moves!! Finally took the 100 for a short test drive. Lots more work needed but very excited to get it moving under its own power. I was beginning to get tired of moving trucks by hand all the time...
No big updates to report aside from a new windshield. Still working on electrical, trying to get cruise control working and waiting on a cluster from Australia to get the sub gauge working. Annoyingly, the tach signal and the sub tank stuff is on the same circuit board so I couldn’t use my 1FZ...
Hey there! No worries at all, I have not posted that information yet.
I am running a stock turbo. I'm keeping everything stock on the motor. I want this thing to last a long time and adding power is inversely proportional to reliability.
Very very busy weekend but it paid off Sunday night!
This isn't first startup (that video I've saved for a Youtube series) but boy this motor runs nice.
I will once I have videos produced! I'm actually hoarding footage so that I can release episodes weekly. Likely mid 2023 I'll have episodes ready to rock n roll on youtube.
Well that was a pain in the butt.
Assembled the drivetrain and put the motor in last night! Took the entire day yesterday to do the job, it was not easy. The motor fought us every inch of the way, but it's in and looking really good.
